Default Leather Jacket

Well another swing and a miss. Seems most vendors are zero balance on the suitable sub jacket. Finally settled on the FMC, same basic style and design... film at 11.

Since I am military, the regs state that I have to wear long sleeves all the time, in or out of uniform, on or off post. Now the odds of getting in trouble off post for not wearing a jacket are slim...but if anything happened and I wasn't wearing it, guess how much the life insurance policy would pay? Nada!

That being said, I have a leather jacket for the winter and a cotton canvas HD jacket for the rest of the year. I've worn that thing on 90+ degree, high-humidity Ft. Benning, GA days and didn't really mind it too much. If you start out wearing a jacket all the time, you'll get used to it. And if you do get a little warm, my solution: hit the throttle and make a little breeze for yourself!

I'm in the Army too. Have you ever read the preliminary loss reports they send out when a Soldier dies? The 2 things they always focus on are if they are wearing a DOT helmet and whether or not they've attended the BRC/ERC. I've never once seen any mention of somebody not wearing long sleeves or over the ankle boots.

That being said I find it hard to believe they would deny SGLI because I was wearing a short sleeved T vs. a long sleeved T. Or low tops vs. high tops.

Maybe I'm taking a gamble but that's how I roll. If it's hot and I'm going on post I'll wear a long sleeve button up shirt over a t shirt then take the button up off when I get there.

A good textile 3 in 1 with armor will save the skin if you go down and won't be all that hot once you get used to it. Any time I am going to be on the interstate I make sure i am in full gear. Side roads I tend to lax a bit since you can't get the breeze but I know I should always be geared up. A good leather is great for the cooler months.

With the south Texas heat here I just wear a mesh H-D jacket with built in armor. With the temps hitting 97+ for the next 7 to 10 days no way I could handle wearing a full leather jacket.

For you guys in the heat that want protection, check out Johnny Rocket ballistic mesh. Not the hard core Harley style but offers real protection and breathes great.

I have the Tourmaster Transition Series 2 jacket. Leaving here in the Canadian North East I get all kinds of weather. 20C (68F) this past Saturday and 12C (54F) on Sunday. This jacket is great and handles the cold with no problem. I've worn this jacket at 5C (41F) (with a thermal undershirt and neck gaiter) and no problems.

For the summer time riding +20C (68F) and above I have a Tourmaster Intake Air Series. This is a great jacket as well. Light with 1680 denier.

I've got approx 30K/KM(18,600 miles) on the two jackets and they are still in great shape. Unfortunately most of these KM's are on the transition jacket. Real summer is only about 12-14 weeks long here but the riding season is 28-34 months. Can you say heated gear.

In our climate you need the flexibility these two jackets offer. My buddy spent $600 on a new HD leather jacket 2 years ago. He still wears it but says he's going textile with his next jacket.

Cheers
