I just received my saddlebags along with my quick detach brackets/ghost brackets. I own an 05 Softail Deluxe bike and would like to install the bags but would like to know what size Torx drive I need for the installation process or should I just buy a complete set. Seems silly to buy other sizes that I may never use. Thanks in advance.
It's the same size as the torx in the struts, so should be T45. (at least that's what it it is on my 2009 Xbones)
Don't skimp on the quality of the bit! Those strut bolts are a pain to get out! An impact driver or heating them with a soldering iron helps to dislodge them. And tape/protect your fender in case the bit slips out ... don't ask.
If you think you may be using those bolts to put on or remove the bags more than once or twice it might not be a bad idea to consider replacing the Torx bolts with high grade chrome or polished stainless steel hex bolts or studs with acorn nuts at your first opportunity.
Most of the Torx bolts in that area seem to be very soft and will often gall even if you use the proper size bit.
Get a torx bit set (up to T45) that will fit your 3/8 socket wrench. You will eventually strip out the heads of those torx bolts trying to use elbow torx wrenches. Don't ask me how I know.
