Harleys made noises from day one, but ya, got that hum in first only, gears may be not aligning 100%. Valve noises, pushrods turning quiets down and gets louder again, little squeal in front end, goes away if I go real fast. Clunk in the back somewhere. Good thing I quit smoking Loco weed years ago, man, you wanta talk about some strange noises?
Those 'sounds' that our Harley's have can drive us crazy. There's been a 'buzzing' sound somewhere on the front of my '02 Heritage since I bought it last year.
It 'buzzes' at about 56 mph. It bugged the hell outa me for awhile. I tried touching everything I could reach while riding trying to find it. I finally gave up and just put up with it, and riding at other speeds so not to hear it. I worried for awhile that something would be loose and fall off but when it didn't I just kept riding.
A few months ago I changed the headlight and passing lamps to high intensity halogens. Last week I got one of those 'rountuits' and readjusted the passing lamps.
DAYUM ... the 'buzzing' went away!!!!!!
Had a similar experience with a ticking noise that would only occur occasionally under acceleration in 1st or 2nd gear. Sounded almost like the engine was pinging, but not as loud. Turned out one of the little rubber bands that goes on one of the tangs that holds the headlight trim ring on; had broken and the trim ring would rattle against the tang only at certain engine rpm under a load . . . go figure. Drove me nuts for about a week trying to find it.
HD bikes are rattle boxes. Unless your ears are trained for funny noises and smells you will never figure out what is right and wrong. Just remember HD is a loud bike even with quiet exhausts.
