Thumbs up Question- Fat Boy

Hello everyone,

been a lurker for awhile now, finally decided to register.
Owned a sportster in the past, really wasnt too thrilled with it.
Hoping a soft tail FB would change how I feel about Harley bikes again

I am going back and forth with a HD dealer on getting a 2011 Fat boy..
I told him $15.500 OTD, he said that will be under the cost a little but
he will see what he can do..Even if I pay $16k, would it be a great price?
granted it may have no extras...IE: security and ABS??
I get confused, I've been looking at used Fat boys for awhile now..
I see alot of $13- $14k, used stock bike, some may have different pipes..
If I pay $16k OTD why would I pay $13- $14 k for a used??
People wont accept the reality that their bikes depreciates??

Also May i ask is the only difference between a Fatboy and a Fatboy Lo
is the 1 inch rear suspension?? (other than color option)

any info would be appreciated

thanks guys

Some bikes hold their value some don't. Some people don't realize that just because you add a lot of chrome and options, you may not ... strike that... WILL not get your money back on them. All depends on how much you customized it. You may have to look a long time for just the right buyer to accept customizations and pay for them. That's why, in my opinion, you customize a bike for yourself, your comfort, your safety and realize that you are not going to get your money back.

With all that said, just Kelly Blue Book (http://www.kbb.com/motorcycle/) for values of used bkikes and see if the ones you are seeing make sense. As far as price for a new (holdover) 2011... 16K seems reasonable, but I'm oit much of a haggler anyway.

Differences... if you are talking pre-2012, there is a big difference in handlebars between a Fat Boy and Fat Boy Lo. The standard Fat Boy has a buck-horn style bar while the bars on a Lo are more of a drag bar (not quite, but close). So on a standard, you can sit more upright while a Lo's bars almost pull you into a C. A lot of people have found the pull back on a Lo to be inadequate (myself included) and have changed bars or added risers. For 2012, both the Lo and standard Fat Boy have the same bars, which are a compromise on the two... it is somewhere in between as far as width and pullback.

The other differences, if I'm not mistaken, are more cosmetic... different floorboards being one of them.

Hope this helps.

Fatvermonter pretty much covered it above. I don't think the OTD price you listed is to far off. I hope everything works out for you. All I can say is that I love my LO and it has been fun doing some mods to make it my own. Good Luck.

Thank you all for the responses, for a while salesman sounded like i was ripping them off...LOL...now i realizes its pretty much the norm iw ill not settle for a color i didnt want, they only had the Cool Blue left, but I really wanted the sunglo red..
I found out they dont make that anymore, so i went to

http://www.schaeffershd.com/new_vehi...sc=Motorcycles

there i got to see what other colors were available..the apple green/vivid black ...fire engine red looks cool...but thats just me..i also realizes they are custom colors...but i hate to get stuck with a color i may/or may not grow on..

did all your bike have ABS/security?? i think it definitely nice to have those features..alsome being 5'7...will i have a problem riding the regular fatboy??

once again, thank you all for your time ..being in california sucks because there is the california emission law prevents me from registering a used bike under 7,500 miles.

that limits alot of my buying choices...i've seen some nice bike but just couldnt buy it..damn!

ride safe

Hustler, where are you in CA? I can give you a couple of places to steer clear of in SoCal for new bikes..
