I use a windshield for winter riding. It comes off in May, and usually goes back on in late Sept or Oct. During the summer I never put it on, even for long trips at freeway speeds. I've been riding for over 30 years and I like the wind in my face. I don't think I would like looking through a windshield. I'm too tall to see through it, so I look just over the top of the shield.

As someone already said, it's all about personal preference.

I prefer 70mph wind in my face during summer months, so I guess I'm just blowing smoke.

Oh, I get it, skirt=woman right? Ha ha, that's a good one.

I have 18 in. apes and I choose not to use a windshield. To each his own, but for me I choose not to ever use my windshield.

I already posted my opinion on my windshield, but me and a buddy of mine are planning a 700-800 mile ride over Memorial Day, and I'll most likely put it on, since it's a full 2 day trip, and we'll probably do like 500 miles one day, and the rest the second.. but yeah, when i'm just tooling around here or out for an afternoon doing 100-200 miles, i don't really need it except for in the cold weather

Do you see any windshields?
I'm just sayin.
Take it as you see it.
So you're saying the decision should totally be based on what someone else's bike looks like without one...? Seems like a shallow thought process... Not sure that I would sacrifice something that totally works for me just so that I can get some sort of "cred" that is bestowed on people I don't know by...other people I don't know...

To the OP: If you think you need one, get one. It's that f*****g simple.

To hell with what other people's bikes look like. And to hell with what any macho struggling with his sexual identity has to say about how girly shields are. Unless you think you owe them something because they gave you their opinion...?

Some spiriited opinions...each his or her own...I myself have the detachable MS Bullet fairing...blocks just enough wind on the long runs and pops right off for those Little hop, skips and jumps...

Whooooooooooaaa, Tiger. Skeez , bud, I'm sorry. I truly didn't mean to offend anybody. When I said "diss," it was meant in good natured ribbing.
This Forum is a place where amongst other things, the brethren could offer opinions and have fun. I've met some very cool people on here that I now call my friends, and was hoping you were among them. When I first joined, I followed your Bones pics as it is a great looking bike, and all the paintbrushes and really did enjoy them. I was just stating my opinion, as worthless as it is, that I love the looks of all those killer bikes and prefer the look without a windshield. Now a little later, in another post I also said it doesn't get colder than 60 very often here and " if it did get colder than 60 I would definitely rock a windshield.". I'll also admit that I dont travel long distances so I don't have a need for one. But if I did, I would put a windshield on for that reason too. I truly apologize to you, the OP, and any others I have offended.

And now what the HELL is with all the questioning of sexual identities in these threads lately?!?! Now don't get me wrong here either.. I like a cafe mocha latte like the next guy, but enough with that stuff. It's weirding me out, man!!

Again, I'm sorry guys.. My bad!!!!!
-Jason.

Wow lots of sensitivity issues here. I agree with previous posts this is supposed to be a place where people ask for help or opinions but also expect alittle ribbing to go along with it. The whole point of this was to ask for an opinion and yes I am so very sorry for making a blanket statement that nobody takes them off once they are put on. I was making a generality and should have said alot of people "I know" have made the statement that they bought a detachable but have never detached it.

I purchased a detachable. Today it's OFF.

BTW, Dickey's thread is not as uptight as this one is regarding the pros and cons of windshields.

Well now I feel like an @$$!

And to clarify, my response about "sexual identity" was in regards to the genius who said that "windshields = skirts" and anyone else who tries to seriously imply that anyone who searches to be more comfortable on their motorcycle is otherwise effeminate. I just can't help but get the sense that anyone who feels it necessary to summarize things in that way has to be dealing with some identity issues of their own and has to redirect any insecurity on account of it towards others in order to make themselves feel better. Just theory but I don't think I'm too far off base.

As for your statement...I wasn't really offended but I do appreciate the apology and I will also apologize for coming back so strong. If I was harsh in my reply it was merely to make a counter point to your reasoning. My summary to the OP on how he should make his decision is ultimately what most of us really do. Even when inspired by others, we ourselves have to be happy with the choices we make.

You seem like a cool dude and I'm sorry we butted heads but I am glad that we can agree to disagree and still show some respect in the end.
