Default windshield question...

God I must be getting old. I have never had a bike with a windshield, never wanted one. but the group I ride with do long fast rides in all weather. they all have shields...

the springer I just got has the quick release buttons on it and there are several shields on the craigslist.

question... what will fit... there a a few roadking ones, a wide glide, a softail one... are they all interchangable or are the brackets differant?

next, sinse I have no expeireance, what size? I like the lower smaler ones I see, but will it really help much? or should I look for an eyeball hight one? this thing will only be on the bike when it has to be... only when I know it's going to rain.

thanks guys

Has to be a Springer windshield.. The spacing is different than other bikes.

I have 2 shields.. A king size that I use for touring, and a low profile that I use all the time on the 97 white blue.

King size I look through.. The low I look over

If you already have the detach. hardware installed, keep your eye peeled on eBay and CL for the H-D P/N that will fit (58772-97 or 58770-96 I think). You'll find it.

Just be sure to find the right model - I still have a couple I bought off eBay that don't fit... Easy mistake to make.

Conventional wisdom is to have it just below eye level, but you'll get other opinions. I have a taller one for the Mustang Touring seat, which sits pretty high, and a shorter shield for the C&C seats.

I end up using a shield for all but the shortest rides, as I hate getting smacked in the face at speed.

Bike shields do not come with wipers. In clear weather, it's your choice as to looking through it or over it. But when it rains, you need to look over cause it quickly become impossible to see through.

I like mine about 2" below my line of sight. Know guys who prefer them right near eyeball line and when it rains/fogs/etc they just straighten up a bit to look over. Height of the shield will also impact wind and potentially buffeting so it's a matter of finding the compromise that works best for you.

All my bikes have detachable shields but I find I rarely pull them off.

Yep gotta find one that fits the springer, hight is up to you, shorter ones will deflect the wind, taller ones will block it.
