Default 1st 1000 mile service......

Just have a few questions.
I'm getting ready to take my 2012 Fatboy lo in for its first service. My local dealer quoted me $299. Does that sound reasonable? Or are the falling into the typical "Stealer" dealer catagory?
I also have installed the v&h naked air intake, v&h shortshots and v&h fuelpak. Should I remove the fuelpak before taking it in for service? (don't want the dealer to try and void my warranty).

Sounds about right.

Fuelpak doesn't void warranty

$300.00 for a service is about the average cost. After your first service at the dealer get the manual and start doing them your self. Not hard to do with a few basic tools just follow the check list and make the necessary adjustments and such. About the only special tools I have bought are a belt tension gauge and the oil filter wrench both for less then $40.00

My first two scheduled services; 1K and 5K were both $347.00 each. It was posted right on the service wall. What gets me mad is to be charged 3 hours labor (standard) and it was done in 1.5 hours. If you take it to the dealer, the price is the price.

What all is involved in the 1k service at the dealership. Mine is getting the 1k done tommorow, but for $300, I can go by a lift at harbor freight and do it myself next time.

Dawgtraxx,
I am ready to do mine . The steering head bearing adjustment on my Deluxe is a bitch . I had another softail 2 bikes ago and it was not easy . I would like to know how you loosened the lower pinch bolts . You can barely get a box wrench on the bolt and it feels welded in . Any tips would be GREATLY appreciated .
Thnx, JIM

I used a very long wrench and yes it was on tight. I didn't torque the pinch bolts back up as I almost never torque stuff up . I did torque up the bearing to 65lbs and then I made the pinch bolts super tight. I didn't do mine at 1k miles as I was to lazy but wow did that thing get loose. I did it around 2500 miles. I did change all the fluids and all the other stuff at 1k. Looking back I should of checked the bearing at 1k. FWIW I had to take off the handlebars to get at that bearing because the socket wouldn't clear the handlebars. I plopped a towel on the gas tank, removed the 4 bolts and 2 clamp thingys holding the bars in place and plopped the bars on the tank. With the pinch bolts loose I torqued the that steering head nut. Did this last week and took a 5 hour ride yesterday. Feels great and I had the bike up to 100 mph with no issues.

Hope that helps ?

Off the top of my head.

Change fluid in all 3 holes
Adjust belt
Lube throttle
Adjust clutch
Steering bearing
Check for loose bolts

( hope I didn't forget anything)

Buying the $60 Service Manual is a must.
