Default How do I figure cable lengths?

I have a 2011 Fat Boy Lo and I ordered a set of handle bars from one of the custom builders. So I don't have any application to go off of. I asked all kinds of fitment questions before ordering and all I got from them was " yea stock parts fit". I decided to go with the risers that are curently stock on the softail slim, but they are back ordered right now. My question is how can I figure out what cable lengths I need to order? Do I need to wait and mount the bars first and just see how much the orginals are short or is there a way to check without tearing down the bike and waiting on parts? If I hold them up to the bike it looks like they need to be 6-8 inches longer, my fear is getting too long and trying to loose the extra somewhere or coming up short and having a binding issue. Any help would be appreciated.

Thought the pics may help.....????

The "run a piece of wire" method usually works out fine. Stiff #12 will let you dress it nicely.

You are better off with one inch to long over one inch to short.

From the pictures it look like 3 inches up and 3 inches out for a total of +6 to me, but I could be wrong.

I measured between where the bars step down and got 6 inches wondering if maybe I should go 8 over to be safe because that was a straightline measurement? The new bars will set farther back and a little higher. Wish there was a formula.

It would be best IMO to wait until you can mount the bars to get the most accurate measurements and to avoid a costly mistake. I'm thinking a +6 or +8 would be extremely long from what I can see of your bars. I'm running the 38.5" Burly's and I only went with a +2 on all cables. Even the +2 brake line on mine was just a little long.

Mock up the bars and run a piece of string along the route you will be running them, you can run the brake and clutch alt. Ways if they are long.its the thr. And idle cable that has to be perfect.your controls wires also can be a little long ,best to go long in case you decide to go with apes down the line.check out br customs on utube for install vids
