Default Fueling a Heritage?

My brother (who is internet incompetent) purchased a 99 Heritage Classic and the Gentleman he purchased it from told him that he MUST fill the left tank before filling the right side. He was adament on this...

The problem is or isn't maybe, that the left cap does not come off. When he turns it counter-clockwise to remove it it just clicks like when u tighten it.

Was the gentleman accurate or can he fill the right side? Will it be actually full?

Is the left cap damaged and how would it be removed to be replaced? There is no fuel gauge on the left cap.

Thanx....

Left side is opposite turn.

Must fill both sides. The 99 is a split tank.

Makes sense....thank you.

I understand that both sides must be filled, the gentleman told him he must fill left first and then replace cap to fill right side, is this accurate?

99 is the last year of the EVO on a softail. Split tanks. two gas caps. Left side turns the opposite way.. Yes it's silly.. But it is what it is.

In 2000 the softail moved to the twin cam engine and got a solid one piece tank with a left side fuel gauge and single right side filler.

Ain't that the truth....I have learned lots in my short time here, my last HD was in 92...my purchasing a new Wide Glide pushed my brother to buy something bigger for himself.

This is just a guess, but when stopped and leaning on the jiffy stand, the left tank is lower than the right. The tanks are connected by a fuel line. If you filled the right first, it will be slowly draining into the left. Could cause some venting issues. Filling the left would allow you to fill the lower side of the tank before moving onto the higher side.

On my old '91 Springer I used to fill the left side first. Reason I always did this is because the bike is leaning to the left when on the stand while fueling. There is a crossover line that runs between the two tanks. If you fill the right side first some of the fuel will move over to the left tank before you can fill the left side. Therefore when the tanks equal out you will not have full tanks of fuel. Unless you go back and top off the right side a second time after topping off the left side. So I always removed both caps, fueled up the left side and installed the left cap then filled up the right side. Allowed it to sit for a few seconds to see if it would drop while equalizing with the left and then top it off.

Not entirely.

I don't follow that when I fill my evos.

But... If the venting is flowing freely, I suppose if he doesn't cap the left side, and then fills the right, with the bike on the stand, the fuel can move down the cross over and overflow into the left side and cause spillage.

A bike I borrowed in Fl last year had this happen to me... Felt like a fool filling the right side and watch it spill out the left.

The original owner must have had that happen.. Good practice to get into.
