I am also 5'11". If I sit perfectly straight up in the seat I can see over the shield. As I ride I noticed I relax and drop a little. I put the tape on center and two inches down on shield making it 18" from bottom and took a ride. It seemed to be good. Once I got home and sitting up I thought 18" just might be a tad low so went to the extra .5". Doesn't sound like much to some folk, but when you are riding and have that edge right in your line of sight, it's miserable to ride. Sort of riding in a cage with a dirty windshield in front of you. the eyes just seem to focus on that level.
I have riden in heavy rain and also one time in a snow storm up in NJ. The car went down on me and my parents offered me their extra car for work until I could get the car fixed and they lived an hour away. I had no choice but to brave the winter weather (no winter riding gear) and use the bike to get the car. On the road about 20 minutes, the snow came fast and furious. What a trip that was. People on the road were looking at me like I was some kind of lune! By the time I got the parents house, my dad came out and pried my hands off the grips. They had frozen in place on me.
The bike stayed there for the rest of the winter until I could get it home.
found a motorcycle shop guy who will cut mine down for $70, takes a day or 2 but that's no biggie - one nice thing about a detachable windshield! He says he'll have me sit on the bike and measure the shield for the perfect fit. I'll drop it in on Friday and can wait till next week - sounds like a Hurricane might be headed our way.
$70 seems a little steep to me, but I have no idea what my guy is charging me yet!
I hope you guys fair well. I have been watching the weather for down there and it looks like it's coming right at Florida.

cutting it is cheaper than a new windshield, it rained on me the other night and I couldn't see a thing thru the windshield and it's not easy sitting straight up to see over it being a 5'5" female. I've got to get it cut down.
yeh it sucks having a hurricane on it's way. Going to fill up the propane tank today, get cigs otherwise I'm prepared, did Publix yesterday, got flashlights ready and just need to put my grill and outdoor furniture into the shed and I'm ready.
I wish you the best to avoid the bad stuff.
I agree that $70 is cheaper then a new one. I priced replacement and would cost me $150 to replace versus cutting. I will know what mine costs this afternoon when I drop mine off to get trimmed down.
I am going to try to get a friend to take a pic of me sitting on the bike before the shield is cut, and then again after I get it back for a comparison.
