Crazy Monster Build thread
So I ripped around the monster over the weekend. Big smile on my face. The bike runs great!!!!! The guy I bought it from took really good care of it. It has some upgrades like pistons, cams, and screamin eagle ignition. My buddy, who is a harley dude, took it for a rip. He agreed that for an 80 inch it has pretty good power and runs nice. Also, the gixxer front end is sooooo bad ***!!!!! Two finger braking, smooth as silk. As I have said, aint tryin to build a harley for performance, but besides the great looks, I LOVE the front end!!! The bike feels pretty nimble and a ton less weight.
So anyway, after a weekend of fun I have been re-energized with this project. I am ordering an offset kit and I am gonna tear into it again in a week or two. I have also been lookin at the pics of the two set ups. I have decided that I am definately going to black out the CBR arm. The stock rear end all blacked out looks friggin great!!!! The more I looked at the pics of the CBR arm, I just did not like the contrast to the rest of the bike. Originally I thought the contrast would be a plus, changed my mind for sure.
I have also been starting to plan a "hugger" type rear fender that I will mount to the CBR arm. I think it will really set off the rear end. The other thing that I reallized this weekend is that the shackle I am going to make for the mono shock linkage is gonna be on the bottom side of the frame rail. This is gonna be a huge deal because I realized that said shackle will not interfere with the stock shock position at all. If I want to bolt the stock rear end back on in the future, all the mods for the CBR rear end are bolt on and easily reversable!!!!! The only thing welded on will be the shackle and that will not need to be removed to run the stock shocks.
I am not getting any power to the headlamp. I tested the headlamp on my CB and it works fine. Tester revealed no juice to headlamp wires. Question, I did not wire up any turn signals yet, and the tail light is not wired up. Does this softail need some type of "complete circuit" with all the lights in order to send power to the headlamp?? I keep thinkin maybe there is a ground for the signals or something that is messin me up. Any input appreciated.
There is power to the tailight and brake light. I just have to figure out how to overcome the stock harley brake light switch on the front brake lever / controls. That little button that activates the brake light when you pull the front brake lever. It is out all the time since I am using the gixxer front brake lever and master cylinder. Have to either figure a attachment for the gixxer brake lever that will depress that button or figure a way to unhook the button and come up with another brake light switch. I really wish I knew what the hell I was doing!!! These problems would be sooo much easier to deal with!!!
Stay focused!!!! My favorite pic with the CBR arm. Picture it blacked out, with a hugger fender halfway up the wheel!!!!!!

man i have to say. i completely understand the want to do the CBR rear, plus the tire/rim combo would be sick.. but i also ahve to say this is really really nicely set up! man i really dig it!
Looks killer both ways! Though I'd love to see the original vision completed, it'd be bad *** either way!
An option for the brake light switch is a banjo bolt pressure switch, similar to how the rear brake switch works. Here's a link to some on JP:

Hey jreichart, thanx for the link on banjo bolt. Looks like a pretty good solution, cheap too!!!
I also have been considering the stock vs CBR rear end. The stock set up that I have right now looks way better than I thought!!! I really like it.
But then I started to consider all the work and $$$ I have into the CBR set up. I cant turn back now. The offset kit and sprocket are on the way, so screw it. I am gonna build it to its final form and run it for next summer. A major concern was the hieght of the bike. It looks all LOW and BAD *** with the stock rear end. Lookin at the CBR pics, it looks a little high. I can tweak it a bit, but I have to keep the shock linkage in a workable position and I dont want the wheel end of the swinger to be higher than the frame end. May look f'ed up if it is "sagging" in the middle. Oh well, gonna put it togther this weekend probably and tweak it. That is a big part of any build. You have an idea of parts and a design. You then have to put it together and make it actually function!!! Then after it is functioning ya gotta hope it LOOKS GOOD!!!!!! Pics to follow.
Stay focused!!!! Picture that arm blacked out with a hugger fender over the front half of the wheel!!!!!

First off, hats off to you CTLUBA. You've been doing things to your ride I wouldn't dream of attempting.
Second, I'm a bit worried about your center of gravity. The rear looks awful light. I know several street racers are very long and very fast, and I like the look you have going. However, their CG seems a bit rearward than yours looks. If so, you would have a serious traction issue. Have you looked at this? Not to doubt you, I'm just trying to give you something to think about if you haven't already.

I think it will be ok. Bottom line is this whole bike is one big experiment. As long as she tracks straight and is realiable, I will be happy. I am sure I will discover issues as I go, but I just want to get her rollin for now.
