'12 Classic - looking to get hardbags...need some input...
new member here.
been taking a look at some of the posts and seem to get mixed signals from various posts about hard bags on a classic.
i have found a pic (added to this thread, if my newbee status allows) of i guess what i am looking to get or what it will look like.
my concern is two things:
1. there seems to be a small indent on the bottom of the one bag you can see. is this an alteration for fit, or is this normal? or am i seeing things?
2. i have the exact bike as well in pic (aside from the handlebars and current bags) and am hoping these are bags such as the FLHTC 90893/94-12DKD versions...since i have the same pipes it would be nice to know this for sure.
so, with that, i am open to options and anyone that has them or not. i am uncertain about the fitting and dont want to flush the $ into it and not get the parts to fit right.
note: the pic is not my bike, but the pipes and color scheme are...
First off, welcome aboard. That indent you see is normal. When you mount the bags, you'll need something like Mounting Brackets. I used the ones from Cycle Visions. That indent is where the bag mounts on the bracket.
There is a Rubber Support Cushion that is installed between the hard bag and the mounting bracket.
Here are mounting instructions. Note: Exhaust pipes must be lower than rear axle.
It is a simple install and there are various companies that make the brackets. I like the Cycle Visions' brackets as both sides are connected making them rigid.
Give Cycle Visions a call, they are very helpful and can get you answers asap. 619.295.7800
there are tons of threads on here about hardbags...try searching hardbags on a Deluxe, or just hardbags in general. The indentations is where the bag sits on the mounting rail. Cycle visions makes the best mounts. Its called a "baggertail" mount. What is pictured is FLH style bags. They are the most common. The ones in the pic are standard size, the ones on my bike are what are called stretched bags. Any pipes that are below the rear axle will work with hardbags. If you are in a hurry, be prepared to spend over $1000 for everything you need. If you are not, you can get out for just around $1000. Cool aint cheap haha. Thats the basics. Im sure you'll have many more questions, but there is a lot of info on here. Use the search on here and get yourself some popcorn, and figure out how to spend all the money you have and then some. Good luck!!!!
I bought a set of used hardbags off of ebay for around 500. They even had fresh vivid black paint. I also used the cyclevison bagger tail. I like them, but for me they take away from my pipes and rear tire so I won't keep them on unless I'm doing long trips, but I did they they look good. Once you get the initial install done its only a matter of 4 quick disconnect pins and 6 bolts to get them off. Pretty quick install as well.
called cycle visions, got a part number(s) and cost(s).
i have the vance and hines longshots installed so i am sure the bags should fit then. (since it is said they need to be below the axle)
now i am on the hunt for less cost (more affordable) hard bags. i got a quote for quite a bit from the HD store i bought the bike from, so i want to see if there are cheaper units available.
I'd go with extended bags, well actually I did. Do you plan on changing your exhaust in the future?
There are plenty of deals out there, see them all the time at our MC swap meet. If you do buy used, go to your local HD dealership and get the locks to match your bike key. The locks are around $20 for the set.
The bags from HD are spendy, I'd try Ebay or Craigslist or even post a WTB in the classifieds here and save some $.
