Hey guys, I have a 2001 deuce and every time I drive it and get off the throttle it pops alot out of the exhaust. I have a set of Vance Hines exhaust and that's the only mod. Someone told me I need a computer tune, maybe its running too lean. Any help in the right direction will help, thanks.
If it is just a little popping and gurgling sound It could be running lean. If your getting a loud back fire and loud popping you could have an exhaust leak at the cylinder heads.
I believe if it's out your pipes it's too rich. Out your carb it's too lean. My old carved bike would have carb farts all day long till I gave it bigger jets in the carb to fattin up the mix then it ran like new.
1st, Check for exhaust and or intake manifold leaks.
2nd, If you are running open pipes you may need some sort of baffle to build the proper amount of back pressure.
3rd and last would be a computer tune. Many options here.
What pipes do you have? I had very short pipes on my Sporty and had the same issue. If they are very short, you could just be not getting enough back pressure. I'm a sucker for the short pipes, don't like anything covering the back wheel.

First off, thank everyone for the responses. My bike is fuel injected and it would seem that most of you guys think its a air leak in the exhaust. So I'm going to check on that as soon as next weekend and I will post the results. Also I'm not sure what series V and H pipes they are, but they are full lenth. Thanks again.
I have a 08 softail deluxe with v&H big shot staggered and a/c mod and had HD do the computer remap because of mods, mine too backfires when I let off the throttle? I think its running lean? If you find out please post I am thinking of buying the V&H fuelpak to richen the system up.
Dojodragon, a picture would help us identify them. If they are Longshots, make sure baffles are in them. Until I put baffles in mine, It popped like crazy. Either the stock baffles, or the DKCustoms Thunder Torque inserts will help.
Same goes for you, airborne. Also, if you go with a tuner, consider if you are going to do any further mods to the engine before you decide on a tuner. From what I've seen in here, the Fuelpak can be troublesome. Better tuners are available for the same $$$.
