Default Dropping the rear cylinder

98 softail with HI-4 ignition (single fire), new plugs and wires and have checked all connections. When riding or at start up the rear cylinder drops out at times for a few seconds and at other times till I restart hours later. No rhythm to it at all. Coil or HI-4? How can I check it? Thanks.

i had something similar on mo 2000 fatboy. ended up being the plug on the harness that connects to the icm. not bad, just bad connection. try contact cleaner, die electic grease in re-seat the plung several times. sorry...dont remember if it was gray or black connector. i believe hd. had a tech service bulletin on it. i cant help on testing on this one, other than to swap icm with known good....hope this helps.....steve

Default Similar issue

My 06 fxst carb version is doing the intermittent cylinder drop at speed. I have replaced the plugs and plug wires which didn't help. Before I got the bike the HD dealer cleaned the carb and replaced the intake manifold seals. I am on a mission and will find the problem. To me the possibilities are poor ignition connections on such as the ICM, intermittent coil or the ICM itself is intermittent. I will let you all know what I find.

Default Found it

ICM was intermittent. I was able to pull and push it up and down and cause the issue. I replaced the ICM with a Dynatek TC88-3 and turned the old dog into a fire breathing hot rod.

My 2000 Heritage had similar symptoms when I first bought her. After changing a coil, wires, plugs my intermittent shutting down became a permanent "no start or spark situation".
I replaced the crank position sensor for $60 and she hasnt missed a beat since
