Bye Bye Breakout?
I thought it was just me that when I rented a SG during Laconia bike week that the wind was worse on the SG with a fairing AND windshield than it was on my train with NOTHING.
I thought my sunglasses were going to fly off my head on the highway and my glasses don't move at all when doing even 100 on my train. Weird, but the OP agrees and experienced this as he mentioned in the first post....so now I don't feel like a weirdo for thinking that the wind/buffeting was outrageous on the SG. Nice ride but that completely turned me off form it.
If you enjoy taking the lady with you get what fits you both.

I have the road glide, and am trying to buy a breakout. I want both.

These are great for Road Glide wind. I was skeptic, but I bought them and did a test, and they are on for good now. Without them the wind really hits me in the face. It is crazy how much they help. I'm 6 feet, 190, and wear a half helmet with a small visor (off the shelf Harley Helmet)

Come on your missing a perfect chance to have two bikes! I love to ride with my 2012 Ultra Classic with my wife. But would not even think of putting on the back of my new Breakout. Honey I got the second bike for you sounds fair.
Enjoy the ride what ever makes YOU happy is what the answer is.

VERY long story - but hubby and I are the king and queen of stupid trades (note the PLURAL), where the end result is that we are totally upside down on our loans. BUT .... we are both finally happy. If you can swing it financially, do what will make you both happy. We find ourselves with far too much debt, but now the serious paydown begins so that MAYBE I can retire before I'm 70 (ha ha - he's 2 years younger than so he can work 2 more years).
Point is - probably better to do a trade NOW than wait. You'll get better money for your current bike either way - financing or straight out personal sale. Yes, you will take a hit. But you will also both be happier.
Oh - and my vote is for the Road Glide. The RG Ultra is the ultimate in comfort for a passenger. We had one for a brief time when I had the crazy notion I wasn't going to ride my own any more. Hubby now has an RG Custom. Not as comfy in comparison (for the passenger), but I'd consider hopping on the back now and then, where on some of his other bikes, not so much. I had a Heritage of my own, and once had hubby ride it and I was on the back. Not bad! I was actually impressed. But still not as good as the RG.

Thank you all for the positive feedback and interesting related stories. After a week, I told myself I better go back for a test ride or rent a SG too, just to see if the buffeting was any different or better. I took one out with stock handlebars 21" front wheel, and another one with Paul Yaffe apes and wrapped fender around a 21" installed. We get on the highway and I turn on the radio and Black Sabbath's Paranoid comes on, which to us seemed like a sign. It is a nice ride but did not seem as smooth as the RG, as Pat and others have said. The salesman that went with us took out a RG Ultra, and then an EG Ultra, so halfway through we switched each time. The RG Ultra had the higher windshield and sure enough, less buffeting. My wife said if we had to go from NC to NY state right now, she would have no problem with it. The EG was nice too, like a LA-Z-Boy on wheels and appears to be the dressed up version of the SG (like a Heritage vs Fat Boy). I've been getting told that if I'm going to make a move to touring to buy an EG and strip it down, it will look like a SG but you get more for your $$$.
We're hoping the crappy weather lets up today so that we can take the Breakout around for what could be the last time, just to be sure. When we ride together, we'll go out for 100 to 150 miles. When I ride solo with the guys it usually isn't that far, it's during the week, and it's the bike night thing (besides getting old and boring it's like a 15 min ride).
I can't believe I'd say this but the softail seems to have been all but forgotten. After todayI may be stripping down the Breakout.
