They are assuming that the bike is drifting after you get off of it and thus rolling up the kickstand...whereas, if you leave it in gear, rest against the transmission the bike shouldnt shift and thus stopping the kickstand from rolling up due to bike movement.

In the Breakouts, even with it in gear, the bike is shifting sideways and seems to want to roll up the stand, vice forward and back. Mine, if I turn the handlebars, it appears it will come right off the stand....its a **** poor design....I almost lost mine while cleaning it the other day...and also when I was putting a mirror on it when I had to shift the bars to get to the left side mirror...popped right off the stand...and if its happening to me I know its happening to a LOT of others...as I am pretty careful (read ****) about the bike.

What's that old saying? Never buy the first model year of anything! Good luck guys. I agree that if you put enough complaints into HD, they might just go ahead and recall the part.

I've played with a few Breakouts at the dealership, and here's what I've noticed:
The foot on a Harley kickstand needs to slide sideways on the ground, in order for it to lock into position. The Breakout kickstand is shorter and more vertical, so though the "jiffystand" locking mechanism may be the same, there is less force pushing it to slide sideways across the ground, to lock it in place.

Whenever I get off the bike I give it a sturdy pull backwards and have never had any issues. I always have the handlebars locked left and the bike in gear. Reading this thread has me paranoid though. I'll definitely keep an eye if straightening the bars while on the stand. I got my bike in early July as soon as it hit my local dealer if that makes any difference regarding production.

THIS IS THE KEY. If you don't turn the bars all the way left, then the bike won't lean as far, thus not locking the stand. But, even if you are on even the slightest downgrade, it still may not lock, so then you have to make sure.

I tested mine today and it looks like pulling the bike up even a little off lean causes the kickstand to come out of the lock. So it seems keeping the kickstand pushed forward while leaning it all the way down is necessary so it sets in the key hole. I apparently do this instinctively but would love to see a recall and improved part available. A couple pounds of force on the left side while on the stand and the bike will probably go down, but this may not be unique to the breakout.

I was back at the dealership test riding the Breakout yesterday, and the salesman showed me a little trick they use that seems to work well. Roll the bike backwards when setting it on the kickstand. This pulls and holds the kickstand forward so it can catch the slot, and slides the base across the ground, helping it slide sideways, which it needs to do to lock in place.

Just came for Mitchells Harley in Modesto CA - salesman there ' Mike ' sat on one of these to move it across the showroom floor, went to get off and somehow got his foot caught inbetween the kickstand and the frame as it went down... Major fx of several bones in his foot.. He told me today that this kickstand does not lock up the same and most touring bikes and returns way too easy,,, it is a problem - now will HD step up,, I doubt it.. really too bad for everyone, esp this guy this major of a foot issue will follow him for years...

Here it is 3 years later and Harley is still refusing to admit that their kickstand design for the Breakout is crap. The first showing of the Breakout at Daytona - it fell over on the stage in front of all the dealers, but Harley doesn't take suggestions - they have to be hit with a recall to fix anything, so unless lots of people complain, nothing will get done. And they wonder why Polaris grew 23% and they stayed flat... Duhhhh.

Sorry to say but I don't have anything to complain about the kickstand on my Breakout. Works fine for me....no issues!
