I just recently purchased a 02 Fatboy and was wondering about how to change the transmission oil and the primary oil. And what do yall recommend for brands?
Do it what Harley has figured out and you won't be wrong. Just get you a couple quarts of Harley formula +. Not worth fretting about saving a couple bucks or paying a few more for little benefit. Plus you can look at a new piece of chrome when you get it. If this a first Harley and first time oil change, get you a manual since it can be a little confusing under there. Check out my post 51 over here for a little hint on the transmission.
midgard attachments are great, but I would not use ATF in the primary since it does not provide the protection for that large inner primary bearing roller (even the maker of ATF says that) and also a quart is about 5 oz to much for your primary. also, your primary like mine probably has a tapered pipe thread that needs sealer or teflon tape.
The biggest thing that I was unsure of was the types of fluids I was banking on going with what Harley sold as far as transmission fluid do they have a trans fluid to?

If you want to keep it simple just use Mobil1 v-twin 20/50 or the Valvoline v-twin 20/50 in all 3 holes (if you are wanting something heavier in the trans - use RedLine Shock Proof)
or..... you can continue reading the next 30 some posts of different opinions lol
I'm not a fan of Formula+, it's just a 50 weight oil with little additive. I've had very good results as far as shifter feel, 1st gear clunk when cold and finding neutral, with Shell Rotella 15w40 in the primary and Redline heavy with shockproof in the trans. I love oil discussions. Lol. I'm obsessed with finding the best oils. Maybe I need a hobby...
