I have an 07 deluxe and I noticed today the taillight only works when I apply the front brake Could it be a bad brake switch if so where is it and how do I test it thank you
The rear brake light switch is in the line going to the rear brake, near the transmission. Make sure you're looking at things correctly though. Most folks are having problems with the front switch after they do work on the levers. Make sure it's not staying on all the time. I've read on the forum that that rear switch is not hard to change.
Assuming the brake lines and switch for the rear brakes is the same as the '10 and later softails, Gman is right - if you follow your brake line from the rear brake cylinder (or from the rear caliper), you will find a junction tee that is attached up under the transmission. There is a brake line going forward to the cylinder, one going back to the caliper, and a doodad that has two wires coming off of it - should be spade connectors. That doodad is your brake switch, and it works on pressure. When the brake is applied, the hydraulic pressure closes the switch, which simply makes a connection, closing the electrical loop between those two wires. You could carefully pull those connectors off, and, using a piece of wire, jumper between those two connections. With your run switch on, you should then get your brake light to come on. If that works, put those connectors back on, and try the brake pedal again. If that does NOT work, it's either a dirty connector, or your switch is bad.
Changing the switch should be simple - carefully undo the plugs from the switch, remove the switch from the brake tee (comes out like a bolt), and put a new one in. You will want to re-bleed your brake line after, as you'll introduce air into the brake line.
Have you opened the rear brake system lately? When you hit rear brakes only does it appear that they are working properly? The reason I ask is there may be some air in the line and a good flush and bleed may fix it if not then it's the switch. Pretty common my brother just had to replace his.
