I had the same problem with my 07 Custom, light shaking all over. Now, the light doesn't shake anymore and it seems as if the light is pointing down. Folks riding in front of me use to say ride in front cause you are driving me crazy. Now they are saying where are you. The headlight has not moved. Could my blub be defective now?
Mine shakes too. I noticed it when I took the bike for a test ride before I bought it. I told the salesman that the headlight was loose because it was shaking a lot, and he told me it was because it was rubber mounted. My headlight was pointed down as well and I never had a problem with it until I rode in the dark a couple nights ago. My headlight was shining directly at the ground about five feet in front of the bike. I couldn't see a thing in front of me. I was riding with a buddy and he was front of me. Luckily I could see what was up ahead by looking at what he was lighting up. I was pretty much blind riding when I pulled into my neighborhood, though. I adjusted the headlight up some, but now I think it's too high. I need to bring it back down a hair. The thing still shakes all over the place, though. I don't think there's anything I can do about it, except get used to it. As one person mentioned previously, it could be considered a safety feature because it definitely gets the attention of others.
Live2ride,
If you look in your owners manual there is a section in there that tells you how to adjust the lights aim.
I can't find mine right now, but if I remeber it right its something like "find a blank wall with level ground and park the bike about 20 or 25' away. Hold the bike upright and the low beam light should shine on the wall about 25" high."
I used the back wall of a mall shopping center around the corner from my house. Marked it at the right height with some black electrical tape (wall paint is light tanor creme color) and its been there for about a year now. Everytime I think it may be off I just swing past there and check it out. Usually I'm wrong, but not always.
I just decided to live with it too, bothers people in front of me way more than me though. I agree too that it makes us much more visible to the rest of the world though lol.
ok. here are some pic of the inside... not to good kinda blury. i also turned the chrome bracket that holds the light to the triple tree around, and moved the headlight out about 1"
I had the same problem. I had some shake, and then I added the visor trim ring and got a whole lot more shake.
I replaced the front two isolators as others have mentioned with a 7/8" long bolt with 2 rubber washers and nylon spacer for each isolator. I made sure the rubber washers and spacer equalled the thickness of the rubber part of the isolator. I reused the acorn nut, flat washer and star lock washer on each side.
The stackup for me was:
7/8" long bolt
star washer
bracket inside of headlight bucket
rubber washer
nylon spacer
rubber washer
headlight bucket
flat washer
acorn nut
I put some blue loctite in the acorn nut so the nut won't come loose. Don't use to much because loctite is a liquid plastic when you first apply it and will dissolve other plastics (rubber washers) if they come in contact.
I had the same problem with my '09 once I added a trim ring. I did what the fella above did, but went with all nylon spacers on all three. Love it!! No problems
