Question Fuel Tank Question...

Hello forum, posting this for a friend. He is in the process of buying a used tank for his softail efi. But the seller says "no clip on tunnel for fuel pump". What does that mean? I don't know either. Is that something that can be repaired?. Not sure if this is a major problem before purchasing...Thanks in advance...

Might be talking about the top plate that pump goes on. It has an arm on it that they are calling a clip.

Yes, it is a problem, yes it is fixable. I found this the hard way when I got a custom stretch tank. There is a bracket that's welded on top of the tunnel and holds the scavenger assembly and it slides down the right side to hold the float assembly. I just drilled out the 4 tack welds from the stock tank and had a buddy that works in a car repair shop tack weld it in the new one, taking measurements to make sure it ended up in the same place. Easy as that!

Here's some details on what I went through to make a pre-2007 tank work in my 09 Fatboy:
- Here's 2 pics; one before the clip was removed, and one after. You can see that there's 4 tack welds, so drill about a 1/4" hole on them and out it comes. There's the main clip area right on top, and if you can't tell, on the right side there's a part where it goes down the right side of the tunnel and that's where the float assembly clips to. No welds are in this area so that part is easy.
- Unfortunately I don't have any pics of it welded in the new tank, but I measured the position in the old tank from the front of the tank to the front of the clip. Mark that in your new tank and weld it in. Again, no welding in the area of the float assembly so just butt it up against the right side of the tunnel and you're good laterally.
- Because the tack welds are precisely under the fuel pump assembly, and the assembly has a pretty much smooth bottom, the new tack welds will have to be ground down smooth so it'll slide in properly.

Hope this helps; let me know how it goes!!!

I was checking out stretched tanks this morning for my 2011 LO, is this the only difference in the tanks? It seems like an easy enough fix. What tank did you go with? What else was involved, did you use a sealer? Do you have any more pics?

Thanks
Chuck

This is very similar in shape and price with what I went with: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Bikers-Choic...06125a&vxp=mtr

Yes, I did have it sealed at a local shop. It came raw, and within a few days sitting in my temp-controlled garage it started to rust, so I had it sealed & primed right away. No, I don't have any more pics. You'll notice that it says its ok for carbuerated as well, so it has 2 bungs. So, a plug was needed also. That's about it. Had it shaped, sealed, welded in the bracket, painted, then swapped the innards, painted and good to go.

Spider is correct without that metal clip in the tank you cannot attach the fuel pump assembly. Easy fix if you know a welder. Also word of advice while you have the fuel pump out replace the plastic hoses and the fuel filter. The hoses are notorious for developing pin holes and the filter is right there so worth changing while it's accessible.

Thanks guys. The welding isn't a problem if I don't feel comfortable with it I have several options. I was looking at either the one from Drag Specialties (which I think is from Custom Chrome) or the RWD which is a little pricey.
