Default Deluxe or Heritage

Got a question for all you ST experts: went to a dealer today and sat a few bikes. Bottom line is I like the rider geometry better on the deluxe than the heritage, but I like hard bags and windshield.

Assuming a used bike, would it be more cost effective to buy a heritage and change out the handle bars and replace bags, or get a deluxe and add bags, windshield and passenger seat?

I also do not know the used market as far as potential supply is concerned....
Thanks in advance.

Hummmmm. Well I have a 13 Heritage. Ready to roll right out of the box. Hard bags? Change out the softies for hard I suppose. Cost used for you choices? All over the map.

We looked at the deluxe and the Heritage and wanted the bags and windshield and the Heritage was only $150.00 more than the Deluxe but it would cost 3 times that much to put a windshield and bags on it.
The bars and bags can be switched out or you might luck out and find a used bike with the options you are looking for already installed.
Good luck...

A deluxe is the 'looker' and with a set of EasyBrackets/QD shield you got everything on and off and beauty to roll.
But that is very subjective .
It will cost you more probably to try to replace bars unless you do it yourself (Bars with internal wiring + new cables bla bla bla.).

I went with a heritage. Why do you want to change out the bars? Is it for height? I love the placement personally, but I'm not tall either. You're looking at about $1800 for HD dealership to drop your exhaust so you can put the larger saddlebags on like a heritage has, as the deluxe has smaller bags, and then the windshield and soft bags which already come stock on the heritage. Usually, the deluxe will be more expensive than a heritage will be, due to the wheels they put on them. There are a few other differences too. Frankly, if you're only talking money, the heritage will give you more bang for your buck, and I do believe it's the same frame for both.

If you are buying used, there are a lot of Deluxes out there with bags and a windshield. There are also a lot of Heritages sans the bags and windshield, maybe WWW's too. Basically the same bike, especially after mods.

Thanks for the replies guys.....Please keep in mind I just sat on the bikes in the showroom..not the same as test ride for sure. Without going into too much detail, I sat on both STs looking for rider geometry; he noted that they share frame, engine, etc.

We did discuss the Switchback and opted for the ST because of ride quality and vibration.

I agree that with the Heritage I already have windshield, passenger seat, bags....the basic reason for my post is to tap into your knowledge and experience to see if I am on the completely wrong track as well.....

so why do you want to change the bars? The stock seat seems pretty good too already on the H. but I already swapped for a mustang solo with backrest.
