210 to 230 is a typical oil temp for an 04 Softail.
The more recent bikes are approaching 300* in stock condition. HD says this is normal...and I agree, it is normal, But it is Not Right.
Around 270* the engine will get doggy, and damage is being done that will reduce the longevity of the engine.
On any bike, I have as my goal, via a variety of methods, to not exceed 230* on the hottest day, riding it hard. If I drift up to 240*, say, going up hill at speed in 100*+ ambient temps, I'm not too worried, but everyday riding I don't want to see over 230*.
Run about 225 with the weather in the 80s. My oil and engine temp seem to be about 25 degrees difference most of the time, but that is just an estimate as there is really no set difference between the two. This is just my bike. My bike was stock last year and the oil temp would reach 250+. Since stage 1 and a PV, my ENGINE temp stays around 230-260 unless under a heavy load.
Have you ever tested the accuracy of your temp gauge? Water boils at 212F. Boil some water and stick in in there and see what you got. My bike, 06 Deluxe with many mods barley see's 200 and never over 210 even on the hottest of days.
I did just get some major work done to my heads and they are going back on this week so I don't know how that is going to affect the temps on my bike. I'm going to post up some numbers when done and back from the dyno guy, I will include temps.
