I'm moving back to the South in a few months and can't wait to finally take long drives and rides on real roads (been diring in circles on this island). I'm looking for some good places to do a good day's ride at in the South. I want to get in as much riding as I can before I deploy again (probably going back to Iraq soon as I get there) but don't know where's a good place to start. I've got an F-150 and will carry the bike anywhere on a good weekend trip from Columbus, Georgia. Any ideas from y'all is appreciated.
I was stationed at Benning many times. Lots of great places to ride. Back roads are great. Go north to Pine Mountain. There is a back road from Benning that goes to the top of the mountains and continues on the top all the way across. East to the coast. South to Panama City, FL (5 hours) or Ft Waltin Beach. West to Biloxi. Watch our for deer and MP's on post.
Sorry for the Iraq ****. Keep your head down and your powder dry. Thanks for your service and get one for me.- Jeff
I'm from near Valdosta, but when going to Birmingham I often stop at Big Swamp Harley in Opilaka, AL or the dealer in Columbus (Chattahochee HD I think). They are great folks and host events, so check with them when ya get here.
Heart of Dixie HD in Pelham, AL just outside Birminham would be a good day ride too. Couple of hours ride from Columbus. Very nice dealership.
It's a couple hundred from Columbus to the North Ga Mountains. Mapquest Helen Ga, Clayton Ga. That would be a long day trip, but some very good riding in that area. War Woman Road from Clayton, Gainto SC is a good Scooter road. Toccoa Ga is the friendliest town I have been to in a long time.
Bro, I live right outside of Columbus. I will be getting back to the states around the first of April. There are tons of great rides around that area. Mt. Cheaha, to the north in Alabama, is about two hours away. There is a motorcycle resort not far from there called 29 Dreams. I will look for a link. The ride from Benning to the old Andersonville Prison and National POW museum is great if you find the backroads. The Florida panhandle is only about three hours away. The mountains of North Georgia are about 3 and a half. I can promise that you won't get bored. One of my best friends just ETS'd and is a tech at the local dealer, so I can take you over there to meet some great folks. All of the guys I ride with are either military, or ex military, so I can introduce you to some like minded folks. If you need any help, let me know. I know some honest real estate folks and that sort of thing, if it will help make the move easier. PM me any time. Take care, Duane
