Made the trip last year. Three days from Stafford/Fredericksburg area to Lead. My Sweetie and I stayed in a rented cabin at Deer Mountain, about 25 miles to Sturgis and very peaceful after hours. If you'regoing it alone, are a young'un (or young at heart), and want the "full" exeperience - I'd recommend one of the campgrounds. Glencoe and Buffalo Chip offer good value, if you want the concerts and party crowds. You can also park the scooter and have a few brewskis, then wander to the camp.
Riding in-and -around Sturgis is great with a new and different opportunity any time you saddle-up.
The ride to and from is also an adventure. I rode alone (picked up Sweetie at the Rapid CIty Airport) but always had company on the highway. During the timeframe (week prior - Sturgis Rally Week - week after) there are LOTS of scooters going to and fro.
Best advice I can think of is - Prepare yourself - Prepare your scooter - ride safe - and have a blast!

Learn from the mistakes of others.
You can't live long enough to make them all yourself.

Ol Biker,

Thanks for the Deer Mountain info as I am planning a trip next year (2008). The rentals there look like my cup of tea....... Too old for the camp grounds!

Went in 2005. We stayed in Keystone. Rented a cabin. You can see Mt Rushmore from the deck. Was a little pricey, but I figured I would not get back there for a long time if ever. Lots of good riding from Keystone, Rapid City over to Devils Tower in Wyoming and Custer State Park. Wanted a quiet place to stay so I could sightsee all day.

One more thing ....if you're going to Sturgis during Ralley, be prepared to drain your wallet. I got to Lead Wednesday prior to the Ralley. Breakfast in Deadwood Thur AM - 7.75 - Same breakfast Fri AM - 10.25 - Same breakfast Sat AM - 12.00. Sweetie arrived on Friday so for the rest of our stay we did breakfast at the cabin.Rental prices are 1.5 to 3 times what they are the rest of the year. Gas was up .25/gal for the Ralley. Just a caution!
It really is a once-in-a-lifetime experience though.Everyone who rides needs to do it at least once.[sm=shades.gif]

Planning on doing the trip in '08 myself, more than just the Sturgis run, taking 18 days. Head out to Sturgis, staying a few days to enjoy the riding, then off to the West -- Billings, MT; Beartooth Pass to Jackson, WY (Yellowstone and Grand Teton Nat'l Parks); through Idaho anddown to Moab, Utah (Arches and Canyonlands Nat'l Parks); then back via Denver, CO; Topeka, KS;Kansas City and St. Louis, MO;Louisville andLexington, KY;Charleston, WV; then back to Virginia. Lots of miles and lots of great roads and scenery.
