I live in Plano and commute to Irving. Not so bad by taking the George Bush toll road. 35 minutes to and from with 45- hour on back streets. I only get on the interstate at rush hour if someone puts a gun to my head. Carrollton is nice place as is Farmersbranch. Don't know much about the schools (all my girls are grown). I agree with others, stay out of Dallas, proper, poor city management and the schools (more importantly the DISD school board) is a friggin joke! Graduated high school in NC and don't miss the move to Dallas AT ALL!!!

I moved to Dallas last summer from Denver. It has been a real culture shock for my family and me. Extremely slow and laid back attitudes. Very high taxes and utility bills. Crime and traffic is horrible (75, 121, 35E etc.). Homes are built on slab foundations, which is terrible on your back and legs. I purchased a new 06 Wide Glide from a local dealership and have received very poor service. I am looking for relocation with my company out of Texas.

My Opinion!

If you move to Plano, Allen, or Colleyville (all surrounding Dallas), the public schools are good, but I live right in Dallas and all my kids go to private school. It's a great place to be for jobs, raising a family, and shopping. I swear there's a mall for every five residents and a restaurant for every three!! I don't know how they all stay in business!!

There is one stretch right off the Dallas Tollway where there are at least 20 really good steak restaurants, all within about 10 miles. And Sonny Bryans BBQ is to DIE FOR!!

There are at least ten Harley dealerships within a 30 mile radius! Lots and lots of motorcycle riders, mostly solo, but plenty in groups on the weekends. Check out www.ridetexas.com for an idea of the riding in the area. There are also plenty of places to party, including Rick Fairless' Strokers if that's of any interest.

Once you get used to the heat in summer, the Texas-sized mosquitos, and the lack of any scenery but concrete and glass, you'll like it a lot [8D]

it is beautiful where we are now in SC. I love it here, but I am ready for a change. i have been here since 1997 from Michigan. The cost of living here is really high, and the school quality in SC is really low. My daughters are almost school age, so I kinda want to get them out of SC. I want to stay in the south, but really don't want to be in Hurricane country or in georgia either..... figure Texas should be okay...

I love Texas but wouldn't live in Dallas or any part of the Metroplex for that matter. To many people......to much traffic...to much crime....and the land is to flat with not many trees.Basically,I'd live anywhere in Texas except that region.Just my 2 cents.

Gotta remember, Texans don't live in Dallas or Houston, they just squat there 'til they can go home. Utility bills vary depending upon what supplier you have. My electricity is dirt cheap here in East Texas. A lot of DFW area is served by TXU, one of the highest providers in the state. No income tax, so other taxes are higher than some places; it all washes even in the end. I pay $1500/year on 24 acres and 8 year old house. Slab foundations are the rule in most of the south, unless you build pier-and-beam.

And Skip, out here in hooterville, you don't build basements in houses because either you have to blast through caliche or the water table is so high the basement would be full of water. Like you said, Texas isn't all Dallas and Houston. I would not live anywhere else.
