help! locking gas cap issue
Yet, add some graphite lube to the key.
Since you are inserting this key many (many) times keep it lubed.
I wish you great patience as that is a theme in the above posts.
Then: as if you have not already, maybe gather pictures of locking mechanisms to deduce which part has failed and how this gas cap actually functions to lock and unlock.
Off the cuff: if the barrel is spinning in the cap, can super glue leak through the gap to hold the barrel in place?
Drilling: that is last case. Take off the tank, place upside down and drill in that position. Add grease to the drill bit to hold debris.
And when finished, yes, you throw it in the garbage [or perform a ceremony in the backyard, involving fire and maybe some chanting, LOL]!
=8^)
Now to give some details. I yanked the little cover for the key hole first thinking I would be able to see a way to stick something down in there; no go. So next, I grabbed a straight pick and a shop towel. I slipped the shop towel under the gas cap to protect the paint and slid the pick under the gas cap up agains the plastic part, which happens to be the top of the threads, and hit it with my hand to try and force the pick to bite into the plastic and start it spinning. I placed the pick on the right side of the plastic part so to spin it counter-clock wise and ***tsss** the damn thing came loose!
I haven't had a chance to truly examine the thing and figure out what caused the failure, but i could hear a clear rattling when I shook it in my hand after getting it off. but I will have a look at it tonight. I still need to get a new cap, which will have to wait for now cause I'm just flat broke thanks to both of my boys' fund raiser that just came up on monday (I was NOT expecting this kind of crap to happen and had to fill up my truck instead of my $7 bike tank too)
