I just ordered some 12" chrome ape hangers and cables from road6customs, Im planning to save some $ by doing the install myslef, excuse my ignorance this is my 2nd year owner of this fine machine, the stock risers on the xl custom is 6" , if i were to install the 12" ape hangers on the stock risers the actuall height of the bars would be 18" in height?, if so that is way to tall for me , im a 5'6 male, other than getting 1"risers is there a possible way to install the apes without using any risers. Thank you.
Ps. Also, when looking for risers what type am i looking for that give the most pullback.
Most risers that short don't have that much, if any, pull back. My factory risers are much shorter than 6" on my '08 1200, they're more like 2". I have my 12" apes mounted right to that and adjusted the pull back of the bars to my liking.
maybe try these for a slim look, but you would have to relocate your speedo.
You'll see this thread a lot, the custom riser is different than other sporties, its actually about 4" of rise when you factor in that it curves also, anyways you can do a swap for different risers but you need a lot of parts to do so or relocate your speedo, some have opted to swap with parts from the '72 as it is chrome and looks pretty good, but can cost upwards of $250 for everything you need, or close to
Your biggest problem is going to be the Deutsch connectors inside the riser currently on your Custom. (Ask me how I know).
I installed 14" apes on my 02 Custom with 1.7" risers. The old risers will need to go.
I believe the 06 is not a lot different from my 02.
The wiring will be your nightmare. No way to hide the connectors.
I finally did away with the connectors all together.
It will be hard to make the wiring look good when your done.
Good luck to you.

Skitzer, do you have a pic of your finished work on installing your apes, how did you manage to hide the wires. Another option is live wild and remove that speedo all together lol.

Unfortunately I can't get a picture right now. The bike is in the basement all tore apart for repaint, bobbed rear fender, forward controls, rocker box work, carb cleaning and new tires. I've got the bars off right now because I'm trying to decide on whether to go to 16" apes or leave the 14".
I bought my bars drilled for internal and have a bunch of the control wires heat shrinked and stuffed into the bars. Relocating the speedo would possibly help but you will still have to be creative about hiding wires. I went with a speedo set up like the 72.
The Custom is not mod friendly as far as the front end and handlebar area. Even the headlight mounting is different. I would have bought a different model if I hadn't gotten such a killer deal on this one.
Good luck to you and if I can help just let me know.
If you can wait a couple months I should have the bike back together and will take pics for ya.
I don't remember connectors inside of my '05 Custom's riser. A 2002 is a completely different bike than an '06. Take the two screws out of the back of the riser and remove the back cover. You'll be able to see what's inside the riser. I'm un-familiar about wires in an '04 and up Sportster's frame. Let us know how you do.
This is inside my '05 Custom's stock riser, after powder coating the factory riser and handlebar gloss black, with internal handlebar wires:

Just did that and glad to see there is no connector inside the riser on my custom 05. Really glad

Wow ... I had 3 connectors stuffed into the riser block on my 02. Wonder when they changed that? You guys are lucky ... it took several hours to remove my connectors and reattach the wires.
