Default Harley Daymaker alternatives

I'd like to improve the stock headlamp lighting on my seventy two, but $400 for a Harley daymaker is a bit rich, Are the very close alternatives that perform as well and install as easily ?
Thanks

Projection headlights concentrate the beam and don't cover the larger area.

You don't always have to go the expensive LED route.
Try the old fashioned and proven way, a relay kit ( separate relay for low beam and high beam ), proper thickness ( low resistance ) wiring to keep the powerloss to a minimum and finally a good, high quality bulb. And some DIY skills naturally.
Some basic info here ( it is for cars, but same rules apply ) :

http://www.danielsternlighting.com/t...ys/relays.html

And a ready made relay kit, plug-n-play style :

http://www.cycleterminal.com/headlight-kits.html
( which You don't have to buy, if You can do basic wiring work yourself )

And to finish off Your installation, get a good bulb too :

http://ridershandbook.com/the-best-m...-put-test.html

You do not have to get those extrabright 100w illegal ones, a good quality normal wattage one, with relays and proper wiring will make a big difference.
After all this, check that it is aimed right too.

Instead of swapping your entire HL assy...look into HID bulbs. Fraction of the cost, but "hella" bright. Got one for my 03 Sportster = $30. Not installed yet, but look at the difference in my cage:

If it is only to improve lighting and not modify the look of the stock headlight, then try DK Customs LED bulb. It is a low wattage, high kelvin temp bulb with integrated ballast that should fit in the stock bucket.
http://dkcustomproducts.com/Premium-...-H4-HL-LED.htm

I am currently using a Pathfinder LED since I bought mine before DK came out with LED bulbs. Both LEDs mentioned have 6000K and 2000 lumens. The comparison pics on this website is my sporty.
http://www.socalmotogear.com/PATHFIN...GHT-p/h4f3.htm

Even a PIAA Extreme White Halogen bulb is better than stock. I used the PIAA befoe I went LED and this halogen is comparable to LED with respect to lighting at 4000K.
http://www.piaa.com/store/c/22-Halogen-Bulbs.aspx

Changed to LED since it sucks less energy out of the battery. The PIAA uses the 60/55W, same energy as the stock, with equivalent output of 110/100W.

I fitted one of the imitation daymakers for my Sporty and really can't fault it for the money

Which brand is that old chap?! I've splashed out on Trucklite for my Glide, but they don't do a smaller unit that will fit a Sporty.

My HID retrofit in my jeeps have a pretty wide pattern. Wider then stock halogens w/o any dim spots. They distribute it evenly. And I did the same to my old KZ750 with a mini H1 projector but it was a 7" headlamp, not 5 1/4" like the sporty. Don't think I can retro a projector into these small housings.
I wanted to try the day maker imitation off of eBay myself. So Benson you like it & it was worth the money?

well worth the money, have now got them on my Sporty and the gf's Iron as well.
Good beam of light and so much better than what I had in there before.
You get a nice semi circle of light in front of you
