Default Broken upper belt guard?

Just discovered that the upper belt guard on my 2013 48 with just over 11,000 miles was no longer intact. It was a straight break just over when the rear part is bolted to the lower shock mount. Took it to the dealer, and they were able to remove it by undoing the front bolt. Unfortunately, they didn't have one in stock, so had to order it for $108+ and expect it to take about a week to get in. They mentioned that they have seen this on two other bikes? Nothing with the bike, so no ideal what caused it to break. Wonder if others have heard of this or how common it might be.

You probably can find a belt guard on CL in your area from those who replace the stock ones for chrome ones. I sold mine on CL to a guy who was looking to replace his broken guard. After closer inspection of my guard, mine had a small crack on the mounting arm...of course I disclosed the crack but the guy bought it anyway.

i bought a drag specialties guard and it broke inside of a week.

Default Thanks for all the replies.

Thanks for all the quick replies. Live on Island of Guam, witch is only 32 miles long and 4-8 miles wide, so the CL is very limited. The Harley web site has the item for $89+, but they don't ship to Guam or Hawaii, so the local dealer has to place orders, and have a large markup to cover the shipping cost. About 20% markup. Was more concerned about how often this happens, and if there are ways to prevent it other than removing the guard. My bike is mostly blacked out, except for 1 1/2" Engine Guard and running lights.

Thanks again for all the info.

Prices are almost always better than the dealership and yes, Harley does not ship to Hawaii. I only buy from the dealership if it is urgent.

I got one on CL for my wife's 06 for 20.00.

That's the great thing about Harleys. You can buy stock replacement parts for pennies on the dollar that aren't chrome, have flames or skulls on them. Thanks to the ape hanger craze I'll never have to pay retail for stock brake lines or cables

Stuff that breaks on my bike I fix. I do nor use belt guard, but if I did I'd welded it.

A picture of the break would be worth a thousand words.

Yes, welding would fix it, yet then you need to blend the color. FWIW repair your original as back up.

Just maybe placing a large washer under the bolt head where it contacts the guard would add some support to prevent another crack.

Good luck.

I purchased a MIG welder just for cases like this, I have used it maybe 10-15 times in two years, but it already paid for itself big time. I also have a pretty good paint gun in case I need to touch up something. Purchased it when the paint started peeling off the front fender on one of my cars. It paid itself back with just that one paint job. Love buying tools.
