Default starter switch issues... help is much appreciated

to start i tried to cut corners now im paying for it..

i put new bars on my 2000 1200xlh sporty that didn't have the groves for the wires (tried it anyways) the bike started went on a ride then it died out on me. now when i hit the start switch nothing happens. there is a small nick in that wire so i figured i shorted something out (also the head light doesn't work prolly same reason) on the back side of the start and kill switch its self the wire has yellowed a little so im assuming it shorted?

my question is can the actual starter switch and kill switch short out (the one on the bars)? i tried replacing the fuse under the seat and noting. any suggestions would help! is there any way to bypass the starter switch/kill switch to see if thats what shorted? i live up in the mtns and the closest shop is 100 plus miles away.

Hard to tell based on information given. Methinks dead battery is a possibility, you messing with wiring may have shut down the charging system.

havent messed with any wires yet just exposed them out of the shrink wrap to see if i had any piched ones on the bars. the brake lights and blinkers come on so i know the battery isint completely dead. and it started right up no problem before that last ride when it died. maybe im just over thinking it. but the bike slowley bogged out like the killswitch was hit. do you know of anyway to bypass the killswitch?

You probably blew more than one fuse when the wires shorted out, you say you replaced one under the seat but did you check all the fuses in the fuse block?

I bought non-dimpled bars too but was able to use the side of a small file to file a notch in my switch housing just big enough for the wires, that way the housing sits flush and doesn't pinch between the bar and housing.
Make sure you check and at least tape all the wires individually where they got pinched to be sure they don't rub & short to each other or the bars.
