I have a 99 sportster and the last two times I had it out it will just stall without reason. I swapped out the tank and petcock earlier this summer but haven't had any issue till recently. I'm thinking it has to be fuel related? I thought maybe there was something in the tank preventing the flow but it looks clean as much as I can see in there. I thought maybe the petcock was acting funky but even on reserve it still continues to stall out. I'll get a couple miles at a time. It'll run at idle fine but after a few miles it acts as though someone shut the fuel off? Any suggestions of what it might be besides the tank or new petcock?
Check your vaccuum hoses from the petcock to carb, etc. my 97 had the same prob...hoses had dried out and had mini cracks...no vaccuum, no gas
The new petcock is an after market one so no vacuum line is connected to it. I replaced the vacuum hose and just omitted the "T" and section going to the petcock.

Could be the ignition module or coil. Both of those parts when older can start to fail or act up when they get hot, like after riding a "few miles". A 99 is old enough for the ignition module to be suspect.

The ignition module and coil were changed 3 years ago along with the battery and voltage regulator while chasing another issue.
Seems like I've changed almost everything at least once on this.

Even though the ignition module and coil were changed a couple years ago, after reading your post something made me take a second look at it and sure enough one of the wires going to the coil was not seated all the way and it lloks like a little water got in and mucked up the terminal enough to cause some issues. A little sand paper and reseating of the cable and everything is running smooth and like it should. Thanks cHarley for pointing me in the right direction.
