I have the 1200N and with the seat being as low as it is, and I am 5'10", I just didn't feel comfortable with the mids. I had a metric cruiser for a year and it's standard controls were about the same place as the forwards on my HD.
I have never really been comfortable on a crotch rocket either. My back is worn out and I am only 34. I just can't lean over to ride.
I like the mids..But I also have the foward adjustable highway pegs to stretch out..Best of both worlds for me..See picture below..As you can see..It's a nice change up..
I like the mid controls because most of my rides are recreational rides in the twisties outside of town here in TN. I feel mids give me more control in the turns. But I have highway pegs on also and my feet are almost always up when driving straight and level.
I'm pretty happy with the mid controls on my XL1200L. On occasion, I do find that my jeans can get caught on the peg when I put my left foot down. Particularly if they have a boot cut. I guess that I just have to get used to it.
I've ordered the three-way adjustable highway pegs from HD. I think that they look great and will be a nice option when I want to stretch out.
I am wondering whether changing the pegs from standard issue rubber finish to polished steel or chrome will help as I'm sure that it's the rubber that catches against the denim. Any ideas?
I'm 5-foot 6-inches with a 30" inseam. Mid controls felt cramped and the bike felt top heavy. Installing forward controls changed the entire attitude of the bike for me. Low-speed handling improved, long-range riding became more comfortable, and I was finally able to put my feet down exactly where I wanted to at a stop.
I prefer forward controls for those reasons. Well worth the investment in my case.
Thought they wereGood until I put on the highway pegs. Then my hips startedcramping all the time when I had to actually use the Mids to shift or brake. SoI installed forward's. I'm 5'10" and have 30" inseam. I love the forward controls.[8D]
Edited: So if anyone wants to by a stock rubber set of mids and/or the chrome w/rubber highway peg set up, just let me know.
