Default Front end hits hard

Hello there, happy to be here.
Yesterday was my first time changing my fork oil. Here are the steps I took; 1) Drained both sides separately, tightened screws 2) refilled forks 3) lifted front end, tightened down top bolts.
Pretty easy stuff but now I'm feeling every hole and crack in the road. Should I have had the bike lifted when I tightened down the top bolts? Tire pressure is at 40 psi or alittle below. I wanted to get into the forks because I heard a clunk one day when I used my front brake when coming to a red light and after that I noticed the front end was riding kind of rough.
I'm riding a 2009 1200 Nightster.

I think I know where I made the mistake. I tightened the top bolts and tried to prime the system even actually I should've kept them off and primed it then.

Welcome to the forum.

You can get a lot of help on here to help you along the way. Here is a thread on replacing fork seals and/or fork sliders.
https://www.hdforums.com/forum/sport...placement.html

Did you just change the fork oil or did you change the seals too? What kind of oil and how much oil did you use to fill the fork?

I did my fork oil about a month ago. I measured what I took out, it was pretty close to the amount mentioned to put back in.
