I bought a 95 sportster and the rear fender mounting holes have been cutoff. I'm assuming he was trying to go bobber with the bike.
i attached a photo
my question is do they sell a fender that will mount to the bike even though it only has the hole where the shock is? Or do they make some kit that will restore the other 2-3 holes for mounting the fender?
any help would be appreciated. I searched but i'm not really 100% on what i found.
I remember seeing a couple of short fenders. I looked them up, and they all need at least one of the holes on the struts which are gone. I don't think you'll find anything that will just bolt on. If you mount something to just the shock bolts, it will probably pivot up and down. You'll probably need to fabricate a mount for the front of the fender. Or you could make new fender struts and weld them on
If you plan on a pillion might want to keep that in mind when you extend that back out for the fender.
It could be a wild ride if it gives up with your lady on the back
I'm not really planning on my old lady being on the back of it but the guy i'm passing it onto might.
what do you guys thing about a fender strut? One bolt at the shocks and struts from the axle bolt up to the fender? Do you think the swingarm would let the fender move up and down with the tire or would the tire hit the fender?
i kind of hate the thought of struts the look of them it not being a hardtail but it would give the fender support. Not enough for a passenger probably but enough.
If you are talking about a swingarm mounted fender then yes that's completely do-able but it's not really an option if you want to have a pillion at all
Some of the problems people will have responding to your question. We dont know your skills or the tools and materials you have available , and may not be familiar with the frame on the 95 (me) sorry .if you took it to a chopper shop you could easily have more in your new rear fender than you have in the bike.
I have all the tools i will need for building bikes. I have the skillset to do it. I was just thinking maybe someone else had already encountered the problem.
You might be able to find a salvage frame in your model range that is crashed on the front and cut the struts off it.
Or go ahead and build it as a bobber so you don’t. Have to repair strong enough to be safe with a passenger.
There are several cycle salvage companies that will ship to you.
Good luck ,and show us how you work it out.
