S&S Super E w/ ThunderJet
cold starts?
idles ok?
what size jets?
do you leave enrichener on while warming up engine? just use it to start, idle for a few seconds, then use throttle to complete warm up.
at what rpm does it got too much gas? jetted rich?
does it do it during acceleration? accelerator pump needs adjustment
does it foul plugs? when?
etc, etc
I use the enrichener to start the bike. I leave that on for about 8-10 seconds and then shut the enrichener off. I rev it once or twice and it stays running.
It actually runs smooth, and I cannot tell what RPM gets too much gas, but I think it is jetted rich. It does not fowl the plugs. I am smelling gas in the exhaust. I smelled gas in the oil, so I changed the oil. After a few rides, I believe the oil smelled like gas again. I see no smoke out of the exhaust, and the engine was just rebuilt about 5k miles ago, so I believe the rings are ok. Compression also tests ok.
When I first got the bike, it was very difficult to start. When it did start, there was a ton of popping/backfiring. It sat for a year. After getting the S&S tuning instructions, I made some adjustments and that cleared up ok. I also dumped all of the gas and put new gas in the bike since it sat all winter.
I believe I have some notes on what jets are in the carb. I will grab those tonight and post them.
When I first got the bike, I was not turning the petcock off during every stop. I am now turning the petcock off every time the bike is off just in case something is wrong with the carb and it is dumping gas into the engine.
It has drag pipes on it (hoping to replace those soon, or get baffles)

Baffles or DK’s lollipops would probably help.
If you need the enrichener to start it, and it idles good and it's running good, it's not fouling the plugs, not bogging down on acceleration, not backfiring, and not getting 15mpg, what makes you think it's running rich except for the odor of gas?
I have a Super E myself, but don't have the Thunderjet.

Tuning a bike for the street with drag pipes is tough, put some baffles or lollipops in it.

I appreciate all of the feedback. I actually found a bag full of jets in a box of parts that came with the bike.
I had an experienced mechanic take a peak. He said it is not running that rich. It could definitely use a tune, but it is running really good for sitting for so long.
He did notice that I have a valve seal starting to go bad in the rear cylinder, but it is not horrible just yet. He thinks this is why i am smelling gas initially on startup, but the engine seems to be running great. He is my father-in-law, so hes going to put new valve seals in it and new rocker box gaskets in next month. Great time to learn something new!
Funny story...theres actually a bag of brand new valve seals in the box of parts as well. James Blue Viton brand.
Now that I've had a lot of good feedback and getting a little work done to it, i feel good with the deal I got. Was kind of freaking out there for a bit.
