Default pipes vibrated loose

I can't believe it,I lost my nuts. Well, I didn't really loose them, but they did come off of the studs. (so far my words of choice are not sounding so good)

OK, let me try again........

I kept thinking today, man, it sounds like my exhaust is louder than normal when I first fire it up. The noise level seemedcorrect after I started riding it and pipes gotwarmed up. I thought I might have an exhaust leak somewhere.

I went outside to put the bike away for the day & thought I would look around a little without taking the shields off. So I looked at the nuts & bolts that attatch the pipes to the engine. Looked at the front pipe where it bolts to the engine, looked ok. Looked at the rear pipe where it bolts to the engine and what do you know, there's the problem. One nut came off andlanding on top of the transmission case, the other nut came off and was still trapped between the exhaust shield and the stud.

My bike has about 3300 miles on it.I changed the slip ons at 1200 miles. I guess I will have to wait until tomorrow to try to fit it.Anybody have any suggestions, i.e. new gasket needed or not?

When I was a kid, I remember people that didn't like Harleys, or couldn't afford them, always saying, they wouldn't ride a Harley without carrying a tool kit with them because they vibrate apart all of the time. Oh well. RIDE ON!

I hada similar problem, except it was the screws for the baffles. They all (but one) vibrated loose and I lost them . . lol. The mechanic at my dealer said not to use locktite (red or blue) since it is not designed for the amount of heat in the exhaust. I put some slightly longer screws in and torqued the hell out of them. Then, on another customer's suggestion, I ran the bike for 10 minutes and then tightened them again - no problems since.

I had a oil hose viberate loose yesterday, only 2000 miles bikes only a month old.

I stopped at a friends place we were talking when I noticed a fresh oil drip under my bike. Didn't think awhole lot of it, it was only one little drip. I figured I'd check it when I got home, about 20 miles.

Til I got home the bottom of the bike was covered! Turned out the oil line hose must have never been installed right. It was the hose under the right peg on my 1200n. If anyone is familar with this hose it locks to a jam nut and a fitting, The fitting was loose, the hose was not, so the fitting really couldn't have just came loose. I had to loosen the hose to tighten the fitting. It seems I have been suffering from reduced oil pressure for the last 2000 miles, cause now that I fixed that fitting the top end on the bike is much quieter.[sm=rant.gif]

Locktite does breakdown at high heat. There is one that is more heat tolerant, probably the one OFG mentioned.

Permatex is rated for higher temperatures than regular Locktite that is usedon lower heat applications.

I believe the Permatex is rated for 400+ degrees, and it is commonly used on engine and exhaust components.

OK, my bike is back in business! [sm=icon_cheers.gif]

Thank you all for your suggestions and input. This forum is very helpful and I am appreciative for that.

I reinstalled the nuts on one pipe & tightened the nuts on the other.
Tried to torque them to around 110 lbs but my cheap Taiwan (spelling?) socket just wouldn't hold out that long. I can't crack any Taiwan jokes if I am not sure how to spell it.

I will wait until I take it in for the 5000 mile service and I will have them replace the nuts & applysome thread locker. The Harley service manual doesn'ttalk about using any thread sealant. Oh well.

Tomorrow, I am going to give the entire bike a little go-over, just to make sure nothing else (that I can get to) isn't about to fall off. I used to do this on my other bikes every once in a while.

So I declare tomorrow as "EVERY ONCE IN A WHILE" day.
