My Harley Sportster 2014 tail lights and number plate lights have stopped working. The brake lights work fine (its all housed in the same unit). Its all LED.
I have been doing as much research as i can and I fear that this model is when the CANBUS system came in, meaning, I probably have to take it to Harley so sort it.
Can anyone help / confirm what to do? What's worse is I can't find the tail light unit to buy here in the UK to try and replace the unit (just to check if that is the problem).
You know, it goes look like there has been some water in there, but it could be just condensation from the cold weather. The cover just pulled off so it looks like it wasn't a good seal in the first place. I'll check out that link, thank you! I found a second hand, working one on ebay so i'll give that a try and report. Not sure how this CANBUS system will like me messing around with lighting though.
The CAN system knows if a bulb is drawing power or not and is able to set a code to inform you of a broken light.
If the bike was setup for filament and you go for LED there are led bulbs that incorporate a load to keep the CAN system happy.
The indicator system on your bike can be changed between filament and led with a learning process to make it work.
So long as you fit the OEM part you will not have any problems. Whether the lamp works or not is another thing altogether.
Really appreciate this info!
How do i know what is the OEM part for my year of bike? I really highly doubt that 2014 sportsters had LED units, but I may be wrong. Were they upgrades maybe that you could get from the dealership? I only bought the bike recently, but the previous owner had the MOT done last May and it passed. He said nothing has changed since then. So the unit must have been working then, which means the CAN system must have understood the unit, making me now think that it is probably a faulty unit! Is my thinking correct ?

My 2014 1200 Custom came from HD with the LED rear fender light - it functions as the tail light and the brake light. Andy confirms what I have read here and elsewhere about it failing if water gets into it.
I also read that it's unique to the 2014 1200 Customs.
So if you have the 1200 Custom it is almost certainly stock from the factory.
so I got a new light and wired it in. Same issue which is really stressful.
decided to have a look at wiring under seat and noticed this (see pic).
so I switched the wires around to match up correctly and now, just the tail light works and brake light doesnt. In either case the number plate light doesnt work.
when I have it wired in the correct way, I also get a small red dot on the speedo stay on.
Used a multimeter to just see if there is any voltage getting to all three wires, and there is. Its the same voltage from the connector to the end (where the tail light actually fits) so the wire underneath is fine it seems.
There shouldn't be a voltage getting to all three wires? One of them is ground. One of them should have a voltage with respect to ground and the other should have a voltage when you depress the brake pedal.
The red dot on the speedo is your warning lamp - have you looked at your owner's manual?
