Default Changing over from forward controls to mid controls.

The '17 1200 Custom I bought back in December is FINALLY going to be delivered tomorrow! The forward controls will be one of the first things to go, can't stand them.

Question I have is, I assume the mounts for mids are already welded to the frame, are the holes tapped? I noticed the footpeg support brackets bolts on my SuperLow appear to be self tappers.

Yes, they are, despite the bolts HD used.

The foot rest support bracket holes in the frame are 3/8-16 thread, my Iron 883 came with mid set controls as stock, it had four 3/18-16 x 1/2" socket cap heads to blank off the holes where forward control foot rest support brackets would have been mounted. The mounting brackets use four 3/8-16 x 1-1/8" socket cap heads, stainless steel replacements are a good idea.

The stock blanking screws corroded very quickly, I replaced them with black stainless screws in 2017, see the image below.

Yup one of the first things I switched on my '11 Custom. Everything bolted right up. I put the H-D highway peg mounts and pegs in the forward position for the long distance rides. I like to switch leg positions for more comfort.

The screws aren't self tappers but are a thread cleaning design.

The frame has the tapped holes just like your current bike for either position of mount. You might find it has blanking plugs in the holes. Good if it does as they will have kept the dirt out.

I have the same set up with mid controls on my Dyna. I like the mid controls for 90% of my rides, but every now and then its nice to throw my legs up on the highway pegs and cruise when I have to run the slab for a while.
My 07 Sporty is a 1200C so its got the forward controls on it. I only got to ride it once for about 10 miles, but the forwards didn't seem to be as far forward as the ones on the Big Twin bikes I've owned. I might keep the forward controls and put a set of pegs in the mid control mounts just so I have the option. Its easy enough to swap them out if I dont like it.

That is what I have done here with a 2008 Custom. Forward controls with the mid footpeg as well

What kind of exhaust you running? I have a set of V&Hs, but I'm not sure what style they are as the PO put them on. I'm curious if the exhaust would interfere with the mid pegs.

It is a custom made 2-in-1 designed to allow both footpegs to fit but and here is the big but I needed to get a spacer made about an inch long so the frame mount cleared the brake rod.

Since you are having to acquire the mid-mounts, have you considered the 'further forward'
version from the 'T' model ? I switched my Iron to the further forward mounts and I find
it to really help my old knees from getting as 'stove up' from being bent further back with
the stock mid-mounts.

New 'further forward' version

Further forward mount compared to the stock mid-mount
