Could somebody tell me what good it is on a sporster. Probably a dumb question. You take the key outand it ain't gonna start. Are the blinking lights supposed to scare people away? I'm probably missing something as I don't have the owners manual yet.
The so-called "Alarm" on the basic security system (standard fitment on '07 Sportster models in the UK) is that the indicators flash in a funny order if the bike is moved without the electronic fob present. Pretty useless, IMO, and not likely to deter anyone from pushing the bike away.
'08 Sportster models in the UK have the additional siren option fitted to the alarm system as standard. I got lucky, because my late purchased '07 has been kitted out to '08 specification and has the siren installed. First time I moved the bike without the fob present, expecting just the lights to flash for a couple of minutes like they would have on my previous '07 Sportster, the siren went off. I hadn't realised until that point that it had the siren fitted! Neither had my neighbours whose faces appeared at their windows to see what was going on. It was the middle of the day, thankfully, and not early morning or late at night.
The sirenis certainly a much more effective deterrent. This owner won't even pushhis ownbike with the system armed now.
Yea my bike has the alarm on it butI soon found out it doesn't have a siren but just flashes the lights. Kinda retarded they didn't include the siren but that's Harley for you. They always sell crap then make you buy extra parts to make it fit when it should have been included with the part to begin with. [&:]
From my understanding, when the alarm is activated and the bike is moved, it kills the starter circuit. The only way to disable is to either enter the code using your turn signal but or with the key fob. I agree flashing lights arent going to deter anyone, but it is nice knowing that they arent going to hotwire the bike and get away with it.
The siren took me by surprise too when I tried sitting on a bike in a general motorcycle dealership in Bristol one busy afternnon recently. It certainly attracted the attention of every customer and member of staff in the place and left me somewhat red faced DOH!
From my understanding, when the alarm is activated and the bike is moved, it kills the starter circuit ... it is nice knowing that they arent going to hotwire the bike and get away with it.
I agree. The immobiliser is a very useful security feature and I am glad I have it. I do have a problem, though, with the MoCo describing flashing lights as an "Alarm". Most people, on being told the security system is both an immobiliser and an alarm, will expect some kind of audible warning sound.Even if there is no separate siren fitted they would expect at least that the bike's horn will be activated.
I have to agree with PigInaBlanket. It does appear to be a typically Harley-Davidson MoCo trick, whereby they sell yousomething that has the potential to be great, but to realise that potential in full you have to spend a load more money.
