Default question: changing gear lube

Hi all,

I'm a new owner ofa 2007 XL1200C. I'm in the midst of adding Skull collection to bike. Obviously when I remove Derby Cover I'll lose gear lube. What's the proper technique for checking level and refilling? Do I just lean bike to drain/fill?and is there a fill line for reference for proper capicity. Thanks for any help on this.

First, if you prop the bike in a more upright position, you shouldn't loose any fluid.

If you are due for a fluid change, there is a drain plug in the botton of the primary case. If you drain it, it should take 1 quart (32oz.) to refill it. The refill level is to the bottom of the clutch basket, but that is where it should wind up if you drain and refill with 1 quart.

Buy a Service Manual, it's well worth the money.

If you can get the bike on a jack, or have someone hold it for you, the derby cover be changed without losing any tranny fluid.

To answer the question about the fluid, there is a drain plug on the bottom of the primary/tranny. Just pull that, and drain the fluid. The capacity is 32 oz (1 quart). The only way to properly check the tranny fluid is to have the bike totally level. The fluid should come just to the bottom of the clutch basket. Most people just drain the fluid and refill with 32 oz through the primary chain inspection cover. That is much easier than getting the bike on a lift and removing the derby cover.

I can tell ya, from personal experience, that over a period of time, just draining the fluid and adding 32 oz, will result in the tranny being overfilled. I had done that about 4 times, and when I pulled the derby cover to check the fluid level, it was way over filled. I pulled about 12 oz out to get back down to the correct level.

drain the oil that's in there into a measuring cup, and pour the same amount of new lube back in, no mistakes in overfilling, as long as it was at the right level before, you can do this while changing covers.

when I drain the gear lube I get 1 qt. out and put 1 qt. in no problem. Use Amsoil synthetic works great
