Default Cycle Shack slip-on exaust.

I just took the plunge and placed an order for an el cheapo Cycle Shack "turnout" slip-on exaust for my 05 Sporty 1200R from Jirehcycles.com. I would prefer the "turnout slash-cut" one but they only show either tapered or turnout. My question is that are they any difference in sound quality between tapered and turnout? do they have removable baffles? This is a very inexpensive slipon exaust, I affraid for the build quality and sound quality since I have never seen nor heard this exaust before, I went with some recommendation from members of this forum. Anyone owns one and if you don't mind share your experience? Thanks!

I have these exact mufflers and have been VERY pleased with them. In fact I know a couple of riders who went from these to Vance & Hines and ended up putting the Cycle Shacks back on. The sound of the turnouts (aka baloney cuts) is a tad louder than the tapereds. Both have baffles, but you can't remove the ones from the tapereds (unless you cut the taper off!). The sound with the baffles in, though, makes 90% of the people I know happy. And you won't get a torque drop by taking them out. As far as quality, it was excellent - prior history of Cycle Shack is that they used to make the Screamin' Eagles for Harley (no longer though, likely because of Harley's own decision to cut costs). Welds, tolerances and quality are great - they slipped on just as advertised and I've got 6000 miles on the current set with no chrome issues. Cycles Shacks are definitely the best bang for the buck IMHO. Good luck!

Sincere thanks to AzflyingDiver for your sharing of experience of the Cycle Shack slipon exaust. My intention is to give my 05 Sportie 1200R her deserved "Harley" sound without stealing lunch money from my kids . Despite the fact that is is a Sportster, she looks like a Harley, She spells "Harley-Davidson" on her chest, she runs like a good old American wild horse, but she doesn't speak like one and that's why I wanted to give her the sound she would like to make. Besides, I think she wants some idiots "retirees", here in Melbourne (Mel-boring) Florida to stay away from her or to let them know that she's coming (to protect me so I can keep on ridding) and not to impress anyone.

Anyhow, could I live with just the exaust change(Cycle Shack slipon - baloney cut) without rejet and a new air-cleaner for several months without loosing torque?

Cheers and keep on ridding into the wind!

No matter what anyone tells you, if the baffles remain in, no rejet is usually necessary. I would not tell you it is 100% not necessary and then you damage your bike from it being "lean". Plus I do not believe you can remove baffles and NOT loose torque. Just my .02

I got em! I love em! Loud with or without the baffles. Deeper sound with the baffles in.

Rejet very much "depends". Just the Cycle Shacks, probably not needed. Just an air cleaner (Screamin' Eagle, Ness, S&S, Forcewinder, etc. - i.e., any high-flow vs. stock), probably not needed. But both a free-er flowing pipe and a better breathin' air cleaner, probably yes (I went up only one slow jet size and adjusted the idle mixture, and was done - your results may vary). Note the lots of "probably"s - that's because it's not easy to say, "just do this" unless you know the bike, the mods, the altitude, the temperatures, and most of all, how the bike runs after the mods (and being able to know if the carb's farting, or being able to read the plugs, and feeling the power as you pull through the RPM's). True, there are typical combinations (example: Cycle Shacks, Screamin' Eagle a/c means you "need" 45 jet, needle shim, 2 to 3 turns out on the idle mixture) - BUT you gotta tune your own bike (or have a good tech do it for you)...

About torque loss - you're going to actually gain power with the mods, not lose any (torque). BUT, pulling baffles (or going to straight drag pipes) and you take away exhaust back pressure and the engine will then lose power over some of its range (usually mid/low). Well-designed pipes and/or mufflers will have the proper flow characteristic designed-in, while giving great sound (which is what we want!).

If you want that Harley sound, I'd say go with the Cycle Shacks and hold off on the air cleaner until you're able to rejet (if/as needed) at the same time too.

My 2 cents!

AZFlyingDiver, how do you like your S&S air cleaner. I was thinking of getting for my 883 along with the Cycle Shacks and jetting the carb. I love the classic look of the teardrop air cleaner much better than the stock ham can. If you don't mind me asking, where did you get your air cleaner and how much was it?

hdlam68, how was the service from Jireh Cycles. I just got their catalog and they beat everybody's price on the Cycle Shack's by a big margin. Just wondered about their service.

Kanshusker, I placed an order yesterday for a pair of Cycle Shack slipon baloney cut (I wanted either the slashed down or the baloney slashed down but they only show either tapered or baloney) from Jirehcycles.com. I received a voice mail on my cell phone from Jireh saying that the one I ordered is out-of-stock and they're placing me on a mail list to let me know when they'll be available again so I can place another order, my credit card was not charged! I affraid is that Jireh is realize that they are selling these exaust "too" cheap and change the price on their website then let me know that they are available to ship! It's just my guessing, I don't know the truth yet. I might have to give them a call to see what's going on.
