I rode a 86600 Yamaha Radian in AMA boxstock. Same engine as the FZ, but a lot lighter scoot.
There's no way I would haveever have called it slow.
I used to roast 1000 Hurricanes light to light
Are you being serious? My brother had a CBR 600, there is no way in hell that a Sporty would touch it, maybe for the first 10 ft. or so.
it comes down to the rider. There are plenty of kids around here that are on the crotch rockets but have no clue how to drive them. I could easily keep up with them on my little buell blast (you know...500cc...single cylinder) and I just pull away from any of them in any form of a corner.
Most of them just buy the bike but have no clue how to handle it.
That's a load of crap Joe....sorry, but I had to say it. It's not like they use any special cylinders or heads, they're still HD, just machined differently.
yeah...that's what i figured once I thought about it.
600's are capable of low 11 second 1/4 mile times....stock. Jump on one of these newer 600's, and they are capable of high 10's. There ain't no way a stock Sportster is gonna beat em. I've ridden 600's 750's and 1000's (owened one). They are all much faster. That's what they are built for, and that's what they do best. Hell, Buell's are only good for low 12's, high 11's stock.
Then maybe everyone I've ever come across that rides em just sucks at gettin em off the line.
That's the one bike I call by name because it's the one that I keep running into. You may be right, (and with those numbers I definitely won't argue it), and they may all just suck *** at gettin em up and movin, but I've yet to find one that I can't lose light to light. I think I've come across probably 4 or 5 in the past 6 months or so.
What I've noticed is that they spend more time shifting than I do accelerating. Their gearing is REALLY short...at least it seems that way. And the two I've seen that get em up on one wheel tryin to act like little badasses had to bounce em and throttle up or clutch it. They wouldn't pull on their own.
EDIT:
Then again...I did just remember that I live in Phoenix....where every kid and *** hat in town has a crotch rocket....so maybe the simple truth is that there ARE alot of really crappy riders and newer riders here....which I wouldn't deny at all.
let me start by saying.. your bike kicks ***. i'm jealous man, seriously.
i have an 08 nightster that's slowly turning into a bobber but your bike is my favorite on this site.
that being said, 600's arent geared short. i had an 07 R6 that would top out well past 60mph in first gear. i ran 6.9's@114 in the 1/8th, bone stock with the paper plates on it and i suck at drag racing, i prefer real tracks.. lol. i love the 1200's, alot of fun to ride, but sorry to say.. not EVEN close. 115hp@400lbs.
Everything is redesigned. its also about 30 lbs lighter
The engine itself was 30 lbs lighter? What did they do to achieve that?
That's a load of crap Joe....sorry, but I had to say it. It's not like they use any special cylinders or heads, they're still HD, just machined differently.
A Buell is an 883 conversion that runs *** backwards. Nothing more, nothing less. Look at the guts of any of em and you'll see what I mean. Specifically the cam design and order. This is the reason you can also buy Andrews cams for a Buell to put in a sporty, you just have to go from 4 to 1 instead of 1 to 4 when you install them.
It could be a few lbs lighter, but definitely NOT 30. That's ALOT of weight.
Maybe your right haha. I read it in a history of harley book, with a chapter dedicated to buell. the book was from like 2006.
ive never been inside a beull engine so i cant say, I just know what I read about buell engines.
I could scan the section if your interested, It talks about the release of the Buell Firebolt and how they redesigned the engine for more power and less weight. specifically the 30 pounds part.

The M2cyclone ('00)was using the sportster engine. nothing changed about it except for what 6066er said.
