Default ??? Looking for serious help...............

I own a 2002 883XL and was riding memorial day and my oil dipstick blew out, hit me in the leg and covered me in oil. I have hadno problems with the bike prior to this, oil changes have been done regularly etc.. Any ideas? The oil does have a strong gasoline smell, but I have drained it, let it sit to see if there was any oil fuel seperation there has been none. What could possibly be going on? I dont want to refill it and run it without knowing the cause of this.

Things that make you go HMMMM. Good Luck with that one, I have to admit that I have no idea. I just answered so you would have a response, I hate when I post and nobody responds.

Sounds to me that there was too much oil in the bike. Did you check that when the bike was warm and sitting level. My Indy mech. said one of his customers got his nose broke by a dipstick, he checked the oil when the bike was cold and it showed low so he added more and the motor built up too much pressure and blew the dipstick out.

I have been told that before by others. When I changed the oil this winter I had the bike on blocks, drained the oil, removed the filter, the bike drained over night prior to my refilling. When riding season finally got here I have been out for quite a few rides prior to his experience with no problems. It really sucks, took it to the picnic to show off the new paint, and got hit in the face with this problem.

Does it push oil out of the tank when running?

Get a new cap. Scavenge ALL of your oil out. Put 2.5 quarts of the same kind in it...including a little in the filter. Sounds like it was hot and bothered by what you put in it. Did you recently change brands or do a change and over fill it? Also...make sure you clean the rubber on the dipstick/cap and that it's not too easy to pull off when you're all done.

I does appear to be pushing oil out, but also when not running. When it happened I took some paper towels put it in the resevoir hole so I could push it back to where I started from. When I got back to the driveway and removed the paper towels it was just running out of the oil tank. This continued for a bit of time. I took it to my uncle's house to drain it out. I let the oil sit but nothing seperated, I thought maybe fuel was getting into the oil somehow, but got no fuel seperation from the oil. Still confused and very hesitant to refill and try running it again.

Fuel will not separate from oil. I will mix and thin the oil real quick. If the oil stays thin when cold it could have fuel in it. But fuel in the oil is not going to happen in less your rings are REALLY shot. You woud be making a lot of smoke and runnin' real bad before you start "makin' oil" as we used to say. Drain thoroughly and refill with the proper amount and type of oil.

Either the dipstick is worn, too much oil, or a blockage in the lines. That's all I can think of. Good luck and please let us know what comes of this.

I'd say the dipstick just went bad. I have a buddy that has a 2002 883 custom. He had the same thing happen to him about 3 months ago. Just the friction fitting on the cap wears out. I guess that's why they went to the popup dipstick design in 2004.
