Default Learn me about clutches.....

Okay, so I'm having issues with 2nd and 3rd. Going into 3rd is getting pretty nasty, and getting back into 2nd from 3rd gear is just about as bad, lol. I'm pretty sure it's toasted, lol. I guess the stock clutch on these damn Nightsters weren't really meant to take a beating.

I see the MOCO offers the 9 puck "heavy duty", I was just wondering if there's any other options out there that are worthwhile. I've heard about the Eagle One setup, but from the looks of it, that's just parts kit, not a full replacement. I'd really really like a slipper setup, but I've been unable to find any.

If anyone has any good recommendations I'd sure love to hear em. I think I can nurse this one for the rest of the season, but it's gonna need to go this winter, lol.

Thanks in advance

Rob

just adjust the cable tension a few millimeters and change your primary oil

I don't know... some people can tear up an anvil with a rubber mallet... I'm just saying...

I'm closing in on 30k on my Sportster and its got the original clutch...

In your case I'd look at the extra disc setup...

Oh... and I'd take it easy with the pressure you use when shifting with a faulty clutch.... I'd hate to see you bend or break a shifting fork...

Have you adjusted the cable correctly? Does the bike go into 1st gear from neutral easily? How about from one gear to the next on the other gears, besides the 2-3, 3-2 issues? If it does, you probably have a tranny problem, not a clutch problem.

Proper clutch adjustment is done inside the primary cover at the clutch basket. if you are just adjusting the cable, all that will do is make the clutch slip worse.

Barrnett makes a extra plate clutch kit, much cheaper then the HD offerings.

Ace, wish I would have known, I ordered that tool last week. something like 75$

I'm thinking what really did it in was my little track outing. The 200 miles I did in the Ozark mountains this weekend finished it off.

Neutral into first isn't bad. It's always been a hard clunk. On occasion I will get a bit of a grind.

3 into 4 isn't a smooth as it used to be either. I suppose I could try adjusting everything first, but something tells me I'm going to find pieces when I open it up, lol.

I'm with you...

....on a bike, you don't really even need to use the clutch to move between gears after getting off the line... HD trannys are a little rougher than others, but you still ought to be able to do it without hurting anything and without too much effort.

A dead clutch on a bike = lack of grip under power, it's not like a car where you can get stuck in gear, it's more like getting stuck out of gear.

I think you're looking at a tranny problem.

If your bike is an 08 and you haven't yet adjusted the clutch from below, it may just need a clutch adjustment.
