Is there anything that can be added to a Sportster for wind protection for your legs? Something similar to fairing lowers on a touring bike? Are there leather or nylon lowers available that be attached to the engine guards on a Sportster? I've only seen them for Touring bikes and Softails.
I made something for less than $15 for my Softail. I have the mustache engine guards and I just bought black vinyl and fit it to the right shape. I closed them with velcro. Not the prettiest things but they do the work!
Chaps work well. Just put them on, and you have good wind protection no matter what bike you get on.
Yeah, but chaps make me look gay.
Seriously, though. Chaps are good alternatives, but there are in no way a substitute for weather protection. They stop the weather at your leg rather than the weather being diverted around your leg.
Weather protection on the lowers has a few advantages over chaps. The first of which is that it relieves some of the pressure forcing your foot backwards off the pegs. This may not be an issue to some riders, particularly those that don't ride fast or far, but to those of us that are often above 90mph for hundreds of miles on end it is very fatiguing.
Also, lowers help keep the foot warm and dry. Waterproof boots are nice and all, but you are subjecting them to (literally) hurricane force winds and even the best gear will eventually allow water and cold in under those circumstances.
