Old Fender Guy's comment about the GoldWing sure brought back some memories. In 1994 I bought a brand new Goldwing SE (top of the line). It didn't take long to realize I made the biggest biking mistake of my life and 3 months later it was sold. It was like driving a motorhome.
I've been guilty of describing a Harley as a dinosauer but in real life it's just a hoot to throw your leg over a pure, simple motorcycle and "get back to basics".
I've got an '04 Sporty (883XL) and I love it. I'm 60 and I wouldn't trade it for anything. It fast and nimble and it all me. All I know is that it says Harley on the tank as I roar by.

Whoo Hoo, some angry Sporty guys out there
Anyhow, I was just at the Vegas StealerShip with my buddy who is thinking about getting back into street riding. He's all of 5'3 110pounds and loves the smaller sportster lows. Im in full support and could care less what Harley he gets but im trying to keep him in the HD models. I dont see the need to bag on anyone getting a sporty, im just happy at the thought of having someone else to ride with. Im pricing out some 1200L for him now, I think he will be happier with it then the 883.
Ride on boys.

Better get him a Dyna for that 5'3" frame. Sporty will be to tall and heavy for him! Tell them idiots you paid less than ?/10 grand to do what they paid 16k+ to do! Anything over the 883 is for ego any way unless ya do long distance multiple day touring. I do 1,000k a month on 05 883C

Ride with pride my friend and ignore the yuppy wanna be bikers as any true biker would probably know chances are Harley would be out of business if not for the advent of the sporty to meet and for the most part beat the Jap and Brit imports of the late 50,s into the sixties when stripped , light and fast was the rage and the big cruisers where considered an old fellers bike. Your riding the Harley all other models sould be very thankful for even envy a little as it has a heritage as no other bike can claim so in short if not for the sporty the nose in the air guys would be riding a honda. Enough said. Have a great ride.
I hear this type of crap on everyonce in a while. I just laugh and pass it off as background noise coming from someone that doesn't know what they are talking about. Most of the guys and gals that I ride with are are all on Big Twins. My 04 1200C smokes them all.
What is even funner is when they jump on the sporty and take a spin and come back and tell me ( Man I had no idea of what these bike are like since the redesign, No wonder you always laugh at us when we ask you why you bought a Sportster instead of a big twin)
As far as a girls bike, I see far more women ridding Low Riders, and wide glides where I live.
I may one day jump up to a Big Twin ( Street or Road Glide ) but I will always have my Sporty.
Big twins are for those who dont really like the feel of the road. They like to set back in a recliner and watch the road go by. Or at least that is how I felt with my Ultra classic and Road king. Nice bikes, but not quite the same experience. Or at least not for me.
Besides, Sporties are like sports cars, sexy.
If you feel you need a comeback, just givem one from Johnny.
