Yeah, I'd heard the 'girls bike' and 'sisters bike' crap. Then one day when some of us were out riding, a couple of them decided to do a roll-on starting at about 50 between the two of them.
You can imagine the looks on their faces when I PASSED BOTH OF THEM.....grinnin from ear to ear like a JACKASS EATIN BRIARS!
One thought comes to mind: If your Sportster is a 1200 ask them if they want to put up their pink slips.
My son rides a 2004 1200C, why I let him buy it, I don't know. That thing is quick! He lives in western NC and the only H-D's in his area he can't outrun is a 124" Big Dog and another Sportster. His bike is stock with Stage 1 done. That's it. One of his ridng buddies has a 2005 Fat Boy and he's spent several thousand $$$ on the engine. It really irritates him that a stock Sportster will eat his lunch.
People who make the stupid comments are not aware of the history and heritage of the Sportster.
As much as I love my RK, I get on my son's Sportster every chance I get.
I have a customer that has been a BT guy for awhile, and likes to rib me about the Sporty, and how his wife ownes one. Then he happen to swing by the shop, and took a look at my bike for the first time, I tossed him the keys, and came back with one hell of a smile on his face, after being able to do a nice wheelie on my STOCK XL. Then said his wife's 97 XL1200 ain't got the power my '00 does. But the whole thing was in good fun. Hell I was impressed that my bike could even do that! LOL!!!
In your case with an stock [internal] 883 you may not want to go after a BIG 88. But that said you can always challenge any Harley [other than the V rod] to ride in the twisties. NOTHING will even get close to you.
The sporty is the Longest made Harley model. Gee ya think Harley Knows a bit more about Motorcycles than some guys with big egos ?
I would not go to a 1200 conversion. Save your coins and just trade her in for a 1200 custom. Now were talking about going after anything HD [ not the V rod] makes. Light to light 1/4 mile and even better in the twisties.
All the guys I ride with save one other sporty have BIG 88s. Gues who gets there first. [ that is if I'm feeling real stupid].
Really learn how to ride her, take your time, once you can scrape the pegs, Your GOLD.
Mine is a 2004 1200 custom, Carb, pipes, no baffels [adjustable Lolly pops], A/C. SYN oil [ a big plus]

I've heard the same here and there, even at the dealers. Dude after I bought my 06 1200XLC, I noticed the "Since 1957" embossed on the back of the seat and kicked myself in the a** saying I should have waited for the 07's to come out. You know they've got to be doing a special for a 50 year anniversary.
Only time I every heard a comment like that was from either people who didn't have a bike or from the occasional RUB. Won't respond to either one. The first type wouldn't understand and the second type doesn't understand. But at least with the second type it gives me advanced warning to stay well away from them if on a group ride.
I do not remember ever getting any wise-*** comments about my Sportster, but then again, I've discovered that a lot of people were not yet born when my Sporty rolled off the factory floor. So, I figure that they are standing there looking at something they are not familar with. Perhaps they are just being polite? ............piniongear
