Sportster Come-Backs?
Although I think its mostly the poseur fringe that make comments like that. Those people are compensating for something. Most everyone else respects that you are riding a Harley, period.
I can't imagine any of them having a bad word to say about a Sportster, as most of them have fond memories of Sportsters they have owned in the past, and were around back in the days when the Sportster was the superbike to be reckoned with.
Myself and other BT owners also realize that a stock 1200 Sportster, with a good tune, will chew up and spit a BT out in the performance and handling department.
I hadn't ridden a Sportster since sometime back in the 1980's, and when I rode a like new, low mileage 2005 1200C a few weeks ago I bought it on the spot. The Sportster has come a long way, workmanship was spot on, and the performance and handling was more than impressive.
I would imagine that 99% of people that have something bad to say about the Sportsters are newer riders (or what most would call 'posers' for a better term) that are caught up in the BT hype. Either that or they just don't have a clue. Hard to accept the fact that a low cost 1200 Sportster will put their big twin's to shame when it comes to power or handling.
Don't get me wrong, as I have owned BT's ever since I purchased my Willie G designed FX 1200 SuperGlide back in 1971, and still own big twins, but I can't imagine any 'real biker' with anything negative to say about the Sportsters.
But then again, that's just my opinion, probably worth less than $.02...

i ride a 88, but my best friend rides a moderately worked xl1200c
other than the fact that after 4th gear the race is mine,
that "gurlz " bike eats mine for a snack!
tell them to stop hatin, just cuz their 1/4 mi times are over 12 sec!

The way I see it is I ride a Harley. Its an 03 with 40,000 miles. Yes thats 40K on a 883c although 20k miles ago it got a very high performance upgrade to 1200. Its always funny the looks I get when people hear how many miles I got on it.
My buddy had a 02 deuce with the 95" kit and alot of other goodies. Funny to see my bike and his head to head during a drag race. Then cruising on the freeway at 70 I get 50 mpg's.
