Angry No space to move rear wheel backwards for Belt Adjusting

I checked the belt on my 2004 1200 XL and thought it might be too loose. I loosen the rear axle nut and to my surprise there is no more space in the swingarm for the tire to go back thus the belt can't be tighten. What can I do??

Are you the original owner of the bike and is the belt the original? Unlike other types of belts, the Kelvar belts used on our bikes literally don't stretch after the initial breakin / seating of the belt. My belt tension setting hasn't changed in the last 30,000 miles.

The correct size belt should leave you in about the middle of the adjuster range.

Yeah sounds like a new belt and possibly .... pulleys .... too. That sounds so odd considering most bikes have sprockets.

And smile! I have a chain and rear sprocket change in my future, and it's the usual greasy fun. Maybe I'll make the old sprocket into a clock lol.

It happened after I change the OEM wheels to PM Wheels and 65T Sprocket. Was told to change to a shorter belt such as is a softail belt.

Ahhh, a minor missing detail in the OP. Hope you haven't spent the last 14 months figuring it out.
