I just bought a used 05 1220 C. It has the quick connect windshield. It's a little high for me and I have been reluctantly thinking of cutting it down and then I had a thought (which can be dangerous).
Right now the two clamps of the windshield are between the two cross trees. Has any one tried mounting the windshield on the fork tubes with the bottom windshield clamp BELOW the bottom crosstree? There is enough of a cut out in the plexiglass to accomidate the lowering but I am concerned about the windshield brackets slowing working their way down the tubes because of vibration, etc.
I'm reluctant to try it without hearing from somebody else who might have been a little braver than I am.
I would not try to remount the windshield other than what the directions call for. Cutting a windshield is a piece fo cake. There are detailed instructions on the proceedure in the DIY section. If you don't want to do it yourself, most glass places will do it for you for a few bucks.
If that's the stock Harley clamp-on windshield, you might want to reconsider before you chop it down. It's a pretty expensive accessory to butcher and there'd be no going back. I'm wishing mine were just an inch or two taller, for the buffeted wind comes across the top of it and catches me right in the visor of the helmet. I can duck down a little, get behind the windshield and problem goes away. You might be lucky you fit behind it. As to clamping it just below the triple-tree, I doubt you'll often if ever compress the shock that high but I would think the headlight will get in the way of the windshield coming down that far--you could try it and see what happens.
Not sure about cutting a windshiled down but I dont think I would lower it below the trees because you may compact the front shocks on a hard bump or pothole.Mine is an older 97 but I have had them compress that far on a few occasions
You should see the travel limits on the lower tubes, looks kinda like shiney scratches, I agree that the headlamp should stop it from dropping too low. I have been told by more than one person that a windshield should be 1-2 inches BELOW your eye level looking down the road in a normal riding position. I made my own, and I made it so it is just below my line of sight if I am sitting straight up.
